Nice touch up work...certainly unethical though I need to learn to use the cutsy things you all have!!

 

Is ebay really a good outlet for letting go of coins you don't want? My husband does a lot of side business on ebay with tools etc. But, I never really thought to sell coins on there however, I have a lot of extra coins that aren't worth grading to me and I was thinking maybe I should just sell them there.

 

Oh, and how do you get such a clear photo of the coin?

James------From the very first day that I ever looked at "anything" on Ebay, I have said that the pictures are the greatest problem. Now, after many years and plenty of "deals", I still say the same thing----"pictures can be your best friend or your worst nightmare". The "honesty" of the seller plays the biggest role in this drama---followed closely by what kind of picture taking ability the seller has?? In the end, I ask questions "before" I bid these days. I try to determine beforehand whether a bid is in order or not. And I look for a "return" policy. If I do not feel comfortable, I just do not bid. And, after all these years, I know the sellers to avoid. You really do get very good---I usually can tell the seller by just looking at how they list----do not even have to punch it in to look. I just go right by the ones that I want to avoid. Saves an awful lot of time. Now, as for altering the pictures, it only takes one or two negatives and then most everyone is "aware" of that seller"s lack of ethics. Heck, even the "big" boys like to look the other way as that 01S Vf30 Barber Quarter shows---that I saw the other day. You could not see that scratch for nothing on that one picture. So, "ethics will always be left to the person at hand at that moment".Ebay or anywhere else----it will always be "buyer beware". Bob [supertooth]

I absolutely believe so. In fact, I've made a little business on the side doing just that - disposing of coins that folks no longer want, and that dealers make lousy offers on. Mostly, this is coins valued at $100 and under.

I didn't do anything special. The camera I use is a Canon, and a fairly new one (2 years old), but there's nothing special being done here. The "unenhanced image" really is just that - 100% unretouched and unenhanced (other than to resize it). For quick images like this, I take the photo from about one foot away, with one single overhead common light-bulb.

I really believe a return policy (a valid one) is the single most important factor for bidding on eBay, or with any auction. It's even more important than whether the coin is encapsulated or not! I simply will not bid on a coin without a return policy no matter who certified it, and no matter what the image and description state.

There is a slim chance, but the typical ebayer doesn't notice overgraded, damaged, AT'd, altered or cleaned coins. How do you think some of those sellers stay in business with such high feedback?

I learned my lesson the hard way with the buying a coin via ebay thing. Some sellers definitions' of "Uncirculated" leave a bit to be desired! I got on some role of buying papacy coins (I may have biffed the sp there) and bought a "uncirculated" set and a couple "uncirculated" coins from a seller. What I received was one scratched coin, a set with a coin that had corrosion on a silver coin, and one coin in fairly decent condition. When I tried to point out to the seller that these would never receive any sort of MS rating from either NCG or PCGS, he simply told me that a collector wouldn't send them in to be evaluated anyway since they weren't worth over 45.00 anyway. I'm still a bit stunned by that one. Yet, you worry about the threat of return negative feedback and all that stuff.....so, I let it slide since really I just bought them for a friends mother.

 

Now that I've babbled too much, does this mean, on the other hand, a bunch of "rare" but poor conditioned coins I have may do well there if I make them look pretty and use big words??

Here is the advice I gave him in a thread awhile ago about ebay.

 

"Again to make money on ebay you have to doi the following.

 

First charge 6.99 for shipping then send coin in #10 envelope

 

Call coins moster toning even though there is only a speck of toning

 

For the love of god man shake the camera when taking pictures !!!!!!

Ebayers love fuzzy photos where all you can tell is you are buying something round

 

say all items are from estate sells and you know nothing about coins

 

if selling wheat cents call them unserached even if only selling one

 

Hype your coins and say all your certified coins are undergraded

 

Finally use L@@K] in title

You are all too funny, and though I haven't had the experience of selling coins to anyone on ebay, I've dealt with buyers plenty while helping my husband with his business on there. I've seen the ebay auctions where people bid on items with no pictures. I guess it's like that childhood grab bag, you never know what you're getting.

Believe it or not, this was a test for me. I used strictly the imaging tools included with MS Windows - namely MicroSoft Paint!

I love the whole ebay thing still......I found some Liberty Half Dollars that would make some ebayers drool with the right fuzzy shot. However, they were really getting on my nerves last night!

 

Thanks for the welcome Chris and for the GL in Oregon. My friends keep telling me I'm going to die since I'm going from being a complete California girl to going to a town of nineteen thousand with only a walmart (NO PUN INTENDED...SNORT, SNORT). I'll let everyone know if I find a prize coin at the local store there though.

 

UGH! Four hours sleep and I'm online digging up five coins I can't find anywhere. What is wrong with me?

 

Back to ebay, I'm done buying off there. Got a shipment of "Coin Boxes in Excellent Condition" yesterday...my children are now playing with them. I am so selling my rejects on there...is that wrong?
