I'm back after a year and change of absence and just wanted to say hello to Tom, Hoot, Michael and all the other good folks I used to chat with here. I found myself becoming quite bored with coins and needed a good break. I sold all of my coins for a little profit and stepped back for awhile. After some thinking I realized my unhappiness was due to my unreasonable numismatic pursuits 893whatthe.gif. Basically I was trying to assemble sets of coins which I could NEVER afford to finish and I was getting depressed and very bored.

I got the bug again and have made a deal with myself to stick to one type for now: Modern commemoratives graded MS/PF 69. Now I'm having a blast assembling a set that I can afford, are interesting, and are available to me. Hell, I've been back a month and am already about 11% done! angel.gif

Wow, you sold all of your coins?

What made you start collecting again?

By the way, all of my numismatic pursuits are unobtainable. I just do the best I can.

Yup, I sold 'em all thru various venues 893whatthe.gif. Some thru teletrade, ebay, dealers, and at shows. I sold everything but a 1939-D nickel PCGS MS65. It has really nice luster and I looked for it for a loooonnnng time so I kept it. I sold about 3K worth. Damn near my whole collection.

Believe it or not, I got back into it because of...........well..............Coin Vault on tv. No, I didn't buy any coins from them. I know better. I simply found myself watching all the time for a few weeks and I began to feel like I did in the beginning. I had a new appreciation for the beauty of the coin!

So...to make a long story short I thought about what I liked and could afford to collect. Something where I could pick up a piece or two a week and not hurt my budget. I also wanted something that could be different every purchase besides a date and mint mark. Instantly I knew it had to be modern commems (excluding the gold). I'm now making great progress and having alot of fun building a registry set of slabbed MS/PF 69 coins. Many can be found slabbed well below greysheet and even their issue price. It's a win-win for me. grin.gif

welcome back Robert! Glad you've got some wind back in your sails. Sometimes a totally fresh approach to collecting is exactly what's called for. And oftem times, there are many ways to collect that are well within our means. thumbsup2.gif Modern commems should provide a great deal of enjoyment for you!

Again Welcome!!!

I think you were into Commems last time around. Are you taking a different road this time?

Welcome back! I think that modern commems are a wonderful set to collect, and many are truly undervalued given some of the mintage figures. I tend to collect them selectively, though it might be nice to go for a set of gold commems since I own many of them already. Unlike you, none of mine are certified as I think the original mint packaging adds a lot to the whole coin, and I always remember the lesson of the Pan-Pac coins, when in some instances the original mint packaging is worth more than the coin! Of course that likely won't be the case with modern commems, but I still like to have them all together as they came from the mint. As for collecting sets that you can never possibly complete, well thankfully I disagree with you on that point, otherwise I would have abandoned my Saint set after my first common dates! Thanks for all the warm welcome backs! Originally, yes, I was working on early commem.s but I just couldn't seem to make it work. I think the moderns offer a wider variety of phenominal coins at a much lower cost. I am currently trying to complete the modern halves first, but I won't pass up a good deal on a silver dollar either. Silver dollars are coming to be the full focus very soon. Then, it's onto the gold issues. I think these are an incredible value. Hell, I've seen some on the bay go for melt or less!
