What's the best book for determination of 3CN die states?

If I want to determine with 100% confidence if a 3CN is a proof or business strike, especially 1883, 1884, 1885, and 1887, which book would I use? Is it still available and, if so, where and how much?

Would there be any chance of obtaining free information on various die states, including detailed pictures? If the books are no longer published or available anywhere (but, of course, copyrighted), would it be improper to digitize images of any of the pages?

I suspect that James (James_EarlyUS) will be along soon to help you out. If not, you may want to PM him. I sold him an 1884 last year (raw) that he determined was a business strike. He is also friends with the author of the most recent book on this series and used to sell the book from his web site. Since he rearranged the site I can't find the book any more. frown.gif

BCG,

Here is the link to the information on the Three Cent Nickel book. I haven't finished up my redesigned website yet, but will restore the link as soon as possible.

Good luck, and enjoy. Allan Gifford is a very personable guy, and I think you'll enjoy communicating with him.

I've heard that the pictures in the book are largely pretty poor. I have to admit that the sample pages didn't look too bad. I've heard the bad pictures comment from at least a couple of sources. I really don't want to spend $200 on something that I'd instantly regret. I did contact the author some time ago; he seemed really nice. Perhaps, after I join the ANA, I'll borrow the book to see if I really like it and then reconsider purchasing it. Thanks!
