Anyone here have the ANA or Fivaz Counterfeit Detection Guides?

7 posts in this topic

Brent-Kreuger's site is offering it for $20. How do you like the book? How many pages is it? How good are the pictures? Could you give me the ISBN on it? I already own the PCGS Grading & Counterfeit Detection book but I think it's a little lacking in the Counterfeit details.

How about the Fivaz guide? Same questions as above. It's half the price of the ANA book.

Thanks!

I have the Q. David Bowers and Scott Travers, "Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection" and like it very much. I do not know what I paid for it.

I have the ANA guide as a photocopy. I received it at a talk about counterfeits at a FUN show. It is pretty good and shows you the correct mint mark locations for coins such as the 1909-S VDB and the 1916-D mercury. It also covers some counterfeit gold coins. I think all the pictures are in black and white. It does cover more than the PCGS book does.

Bill Fivaz guide is a small spiral bound book. The pictures are small and are in low res. It does not cover gold. If you have the PCGS book, you will not need this one.

Thanks for pointing this out. Now I know I don't want the Fivaz book. I'll have to actually see the others. I've heard the JP Martin book is pretty good.

Hmm, I didn't think about it, but I do have a counterfeit book on the counterfeits smile.gif

The Fivaz book is small and is meant to be easy to carry to a coin show. The information inside is not bad, but the 1st PCGS book covers everything the Fivaz book has plus lots more.

I saw a copy of the 2nd PCGS book. It is much smaller and did not have the good quality high res glossy picture. The 1st book is much better.
