I know this is off topic for this fourm but Id like to post here to get a few others views.

To follow is a copy of a post that I sent to "Ask NGC"

--->Who and where should one suggest that NGC start a grading service for Gem stones? Since they have comic, cards and currency.

I do collect coins and my wife collects Gems. So I felt a grading service for gems would be a welcomed addition. This way one could buy and sell encapsulated gems as we do coins now. With info on the certificate like weight, color, type, overall grade ect.......... to authenticate and things like this. Any thoughts?

Thanks cloud9.gif<---

I am not sure I have seen one that encapsulates along with a sealed certificate?

I have seen some with so called papers that you could swap a very similar stone with.

Some diamonds are laser inscribed so you can't switch the certificates. I've seen other stones sealed in plastic with certs.

Ok maybe I am off base here or in the dark. So maybe I should ask If NGC should start such a service.

Also if you know of such services would you name them for me?

Thanks wink.gif

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and AGS (American Gem Society) are two that I know of. I'm sure there are more.

the best item in thew world that is easily transported and means value and monry in any corner of the world are gem natural colored diamonds

but like coins and evenmoreso i might add you need to be able evaulate them yourself and know and understand what you are looking at then they are easy to value

and usually the entry fee in such markets is into the millions at least one million for the best and then this is a small non player entrance fee

and right now with these stones the gia cant tell you what you needs to know in terms of top fancy color only in color in terms of yellow in the stone from flawless white

the ags is not good the ags is the icg pci ntc of grading when you put it in coin terms 893whatthe.gif

It would never fly. Last year I saw a documentary about the gem grading business. The big European "houses" control the vast majority of all the gemstones that enter the worldwide market and they grade everything themselves. Anyone trying to "horn in" on their iron-fisted rule is dealt with simply and swiftly by controlling market price and, literally, bankrupting the opposition.

No you are WRONG. As a geologist and former member of the 2 US major gem grading services, I can assure you that each gemstone is electronically, light wave, and density tested as appropriate, and the stone's unique flaws documented in a photo and grade sheet. The large gemstone "monopolys" want every stone rigerously graded if possible and even support laser engraving diamonds to stop fraud and sale of terrorist/illegal gems. Any good jeweler can send in you gems to be graded and authenicated for insurance purposes. In fact gems are MUCH more rigerously tested and objectively graded than coins, due to the many scientific tests. The cost is minimal compared to you insurance protection available. And if you run into a bad jeweler, they will think twice about switching you stone if there's a microphoto registered and a laser number!!!!! "Trust, but verify" 893naughty-thumb.gif
