Since this being the 83 major DDR -- I have a question I would like to ask.

It is a known fact (I have both in my personal collection), that the obverse for this variety exhibits the exact same die markers of which is mated with or without the major DDR.

Here's the questions:

Was the DDR spotted, pulled from production and replaced with a normal reverse?

or

Was the normal mated reverse pulled from production and was unknowingly replaced with the DDR?

What's your theory?

Thanks...

From the information you are giving us it sounds as though either the normal reverse or the DDR could have been the first pairing with the obverse in question. It seems as though a reverse might have failed and been replaced with another.

Die Varieties, welcome to the board. You'll find loads of great things here. The combined knowledge of a bunch coin collectors comes in mighty handy. Always a great read here.

What all do you collect? Just die varieties or more?

Thanks for the welcome.

Primarily mess with varieties/errors -- but I like everything. Now if I can convince my wallet that -- then I'm good to go!

Sent in a couple of errors to NGC for grading/encapsulation (first time to NGC BTW) and should be getting them back shortly. Both errors were retrieved out of circulation. One was a 1994 cent with 170 degree rotated reverse, almost medal alignment. The other was a 1993 cent multi-struck thru rotated capped die. I checked their website and the 94 got a MS 66 RD and the 93 got a MS 65 RD. Not to bad coming from circulation.

I also luv them toned coins. Seen some beauties on this board! I had to get a bib from all my drooling!

Welcome to the boards, DV! That is quite an interesting find. The only thing strange about it is the fact that I cannot recall ever reading about a terrorist attack on the Lincoln Memorial in 1983. It looks like the rocket and grenade launchers did a pretty good job on it.

ROTFLOL!!! Yep -- some serious pot holes on that one! Oh well -- that's the way it goes. Anyway -- since I only have one cent invested in the thing I can't complain. Hmm -- the way it looks it might not even be worth one cent?

I just luv that 2001 D Kennedy 50C Rev Clad Layer Missing NGC-64 RD. That is a beauty of an error. Congrats on that baby! thumbsup2.gif

Here's a scan of the coin and below it are close-up pics. The scans don't do the coin justice. It was struck at least 3x and very nice two dates, LIBERTY and two Lincolns. NGC graded it MINT ERROR MS 65 RD "Obverse Multi-Struck Thru Rotated Capped Die." I came across the coin while searching circulated cent rolls obtained from my local bank. It's amazing what's out there to be found. How people miss this beats the heck out of me.

Thanks, Billy! The U.S. Mint was nice enought to give it to me in a $100 Mixed P & D bag earlier this year. With the shipping, it cost me 70 cents. I also got an MS68 & MS67 out of the same bag.

Have a nice holiday weekend!

Chris,

WOW!!! Don't you just luv it? smile.gif

I wanted to ask you a question. Has your Kennedy been published in any news media? The reason why I ask is I'm a columnist/contributor for Numismatic News magazine and that would make a very nice article. I don't know iffin you subscribe to NN -- but maybe you have seen some of my past articles. I am also author of "A Detailed Analysis of Lincoln Cent Varieties - Volume I" and co-author of "The Authoritative Reference on Eisenhower Dollars" with John A. Wexler and Kevin Flynn.

It's just a thought. If interested -- you can contact me at dievarieties@sc.rr.com

Thanks and you have a great 4th weekend and everybody be safe out there.

Why? I haven't looked in the book, but it's just another minor split serif 60D isn't it? Well, or a minor D/D/D...

When I first read your post it didn't have a pic. I thought you had found 6 of the 83 major DDR in a roll!!!

Those are some cool coins and a very cool circulation finds.

I got a nice AU-58 '83-D quarter with a type "d" reverse today in a few roll I got at the bank. These aren't especially uncommon except in this condition.

Well, that makes perfect sense. I was impressed with your knowldedge and thought, "Wow, this guy knows his stuff!"

Great to have you onboard the boards! We're used to the less articulate few like Chris Machuga where we have to wade through a mountain of... well, you know. 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif

P.S. I actually think that Numismatic News is a better written publication than Coin World although Coin World definitely has quantity on its side.

What say you:

"Dang! I want to see that image!"

Got the 1993 cent back from NGC. This is another one of those coins that I found while searching circulated rolls from my local bank. Usually this type of error is found in mint sewn bags or retrieved from counting rooms. The coin exhibits an eye-popping, jaw-dropping two complete images of Lincoln, two LIBERTY's and two dates flipping back and forth when you rotate the coin. How anybody can miss this naked-eye visible error stumps me.

When people find out that I do a lot of searching circulated rolls -- they usually reply with something along the lines of, "I don't have the time or patience for that, besides -- there's nothing valuable out there to be found anymore in circulation!" I'm here to say there is -- all one has to do is look. My bourse floor doesn't end when the convention is over -- but rather just begins when I walk out the front doors.

I was offered quite a substantial price for the coin when it was raw and declined. I'm a collector/researcher/author and enjoy the hobby learning, sharing experiences and helping others. For me -- this makes a great conversation piece and is worth far more in hopes of recruiting potential new collectors and YN's to join in the fun of our great hobby.

As always --- Good Hunting!!!

DieVarieties;

I've got both the books you list and have enjoyed all the articles of yours that I've seen. It's great to see you posting.

In addition to the many great errors and varieties in pocket change there are also huge numbers of increasingly scarce high grade coins. Circulation coins may never have been richer from a numismatic perspective.

How do you accout for the extremely low pops on most of the varieties and doubled dies on clads? Are these going to be rare only in high grade?
