Greetings to all Collectors!! I just found this site and from what I can tell it's an awesome place to talk about collecting. I'm mainly into coins, but do a few sports cards also. Right now I'm awaiting shipment of my Westward Journey Coin and Medal Sets from the mint. Just got notice they'd been shipped as of 6/24. I feel lucky to have gotten them at issue prices, since they're already over $60 on e-bay at last check. I look forward to lots of great discussions in the future! Kind regards to all!

Welcome to the board!

You are, indeed, lucky to have notice that they shipped already. Everyone else's are shipping like 7/13 or so. Did you order yours in the AM of the first day offered? I just wonder where the rest of us stand with the Mint regarding these sets.

At any rate, welcome, read often and post when you can

Thanks everybody for the great welcomes! I'm originally from Tennessee, but have lived in Colorado for over twenty years now. I have given up on sports cards pretty much, and am concentrating on proof sets, mint sets, silver dollars, including the silver eagles, a few commemoratives, and am working on the completion of various (mostly modern) sets. I started collecting as a youth, stopped as a young adult, and resumed again in middle age.

I'm happily married with three grown children and five grand kids. I'm about to turn a young 60 years old, and am now a retired educator and vocational rehab counselor/evaluator. I love collecting coins, and am learning a lot, but have a long way to go before I can call myself truly knowledgable. I especially need more training in grading. Thanks again to all. I look forward to learning from the contributers to this forum, and to sharing knowledge acquired from this wonderful hobby with everyone.

When did you order those nickel sets?

Jonathan

I ordered mine within the first several hours they were available back on 5/25, I believe. It took almost a month to receive a "shipped" notice, and until Mon., 7/01 to get them in hand. I feel very fortunate indeed to have gotten them. Good luck to all others who ordered! Hope everyone gets theirs soon.

Welcome Coin Stasher! My sets are supposed to ship about 7/14/05. I am looking forward to receiving them and hope that the medal is nicer than last years (it will be the same though).

You know, OT3, I can't figure out why the mint didn't protect the peace medal in an air-tite, like they did the other coins. I'm sure cost must have played a role in that decision, but it still doesn't make good sense to a collector, wouldn't you agree? I hope you get your sets soon!.

I think that they produced and packaged the medal by the cheapest means possible to make the most money off the sets. This is unfortunate because the sets aren't cheap relative to the coin content value.

So, here's the question. Do you think once the supply of these Westward Journey sets dries up, they will go up in value? Or do you think, as has been the trend due to the Mint's unfair practice of sending out a few and making people think they took orders for too many and people then think they won't get theirs, the price has dropped by $20 in the past week as the "rest" of the unlucky people finally got theirs, the price will continue to drop. (long sentence, but I had to get all that in) Will the price continue to drop and my windfall disappear? I only wanted to sell three of my five sets in order to fund the purchase of "real" coins. I had hoped for about $75 per set. Am I dreaming? Will the sets go back up?

Jonathan, If I'm not mistaken, I seem to remember having ordered my sets around noon mountain time here in CO, which would have been 2:00 p.m eastern. I tried to get through earlier, but couldn't, and almost gave up. Fortunately, I kept calling, finally placed my order, and eventually received my sets a little over a month later. I sincerely hope you get all you ordered soon.

As for their future values, it's anyone's guess. I suspect they might decline a bit and then level off around $50 or so, but who knows?. The 2004's are down a bit, but still around $100-$120 last time I checked on e-Bay. Again, Good Luck with your order!!

Thanks!

sign-rantpost.gifI already got my order. I was just person_without_enough_empathying because I feel they SHOULD have shipped all the sets in a 2-3 day period. They should have all been made already and warehoused. They SHOULD not have a spread of 6 weeks between those who ordered in the AM on the first day and those who ordered a few hours later. Those who got their coins several weeks ago enjoyed high prices on eBay, while the rest of us waited and wondered if we would even see the sets in our mailbox. I can understand a few hours meaning a day or two longer to wait, but several weeks? It seems they didn't even make all 75,000 ahead of time. Like they were too stupid to think they might sell out. DuH! Of course they knew they would sell out.

Rant off

Jonathan
