Well, he got what is probably proscribed for the amount stolen but I think a stronger message needs to be sent. However, nothing will really change unless/until ebay (and similar) find a reliable method of preventing scams.

You can't blame eBay for many of the scams. Have you seen some of the scams that get bids? I'm amazed at the stupidity of some bidders. There is a certain segment of the population (and it appears they all have internet access and eBay accounts) that just deserve to get screwed because they are so stupid.

Yes, that is true. Buyers bear some responsibility. But the things that ebay has let through even when vigilant watchers find obvious scams and alert them is frightening.
