Have any of you ever reached this point in your collecting???

23 posts in this topic

For the past few years I have been looking for a few specific coins and now all of a sudden I have found all of them and purchased them.

1. 1916/1916 doubled die nickel

2. ding free (lol) '56 flyer

3. 1857 25c with clash of a FE on reverse

4. 1796 quarter

I have to say that right now at this point, I am at a bit of a loss at what to look for or go for next. I really enjoy owning and finding such difficult coins as some of the ones I have.

I have considered selling off some of my better key date coins...i.e....SVDB, 16d dime, etc......and getting a nice chunk of money and holding it until I figure out what I might want next.

Nice haul of stuff, I've enjoyed reading of the hunt and acquisitions! I've never really made it to the point where you are, I'm better at starting collections than finishing them.

As for where to go next, In my unbiased opinion world coins are pretty compelling. Or is that pretty and compelling... grin.gif

Failing that, how about patterns?

I'm in the same spot goose3.

Nothing seems to strike me as something really cool to jump into. The good part is that it gave me the time to look back a bit. I found coins I had forgotten. smile.gif

I've come to a similar point a few times and it has always seemed to work out well for me in terms of the new direction that I have chosen.

Hey, goose!

One time I did. But then I had to sell what I got to finance repairs and the hunt began again for cool stuff.

Early gold type, goose3? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

interesting you should mention that....since I don't think a tow truck could get that Gobrecht from Tom, I have thought about a late 1790's 5.00 gold piece. Those are awful neat...much neater than any SVDB or 16d, etc...

I think that the $2.5 and $5 classic head issues are a great issue and still very reasonably priced, too, although I was mainly refering to the early issues as you infered.

Goose3, you have actually affected my tastes and opinions somewhat. That and getting a very nice, original AG 1806 bust quarter. I really do love that coin. It is an awesome piece even in such a low grade. I mainly collect high-grade type coins so this was kind of a pleasant switch in mentality, which is a good thing. I remember when you posted your '96 quarter and I'm ashamed to say that I thought, "Ho-hum". Kind of shows you how ignorant I was. Now, I think that that would be an awesome coin to own.

Since I bought my 1836 $5 gold, a totally original AU50 NGC example, my interest in gold has really been stimulated although I'm not actively pursuing it since I'm concentrating on my other types. I would like to get its little sister, however.

I would love to get some of the early stuff that you're after. Probably someday. Anyway, dude, thanks for the positive influence. thumbsup2.gif

I've always found that selling stuff gets me re-interested in collecting pursuits! smile.gif Lots of reading, alternatively, can always get the collecting blood pumping again. yay.gif

Goose

You should consider the 12 piece 1858 small cent pattern set. It is a challenge but very doable over time. In addition this set is IMO the best illustration of a design transition across the entire pattern spectrum.

The coins are scarce but available with most being R5 (31-75 minted) and relatively affordable in the 2-4k price range for 64/65 grade coins.

Seems like a good "fit" based on your collecting interests.

I worked on this set off and on for 8 years before finally completing it in 2004 and had a blast with it laugh.gif

I've also been influenced by the way Goose3 collects. Concentrating on keys has a certain appeal.

I'm also at that point - very few upgrades available to my current sets and no other series has the same appeal to me. I've decided to collect the collectors in the meantime - an eye appealing specimen from each of the great collections over the years. I will then do a writeup of each in the description of the coin.

It's funny is that I've been doing this for over a year now and ANR did exactly the same thing for the Cardinal collection - a nice little cameo on each great collector in the past of his coins.

TDN, very cool idea. I would like to own an Eliasberg coin someday.

No doubt, she does exhibit sex-appeal and is one smart chick, too.

I didn't know my lowly good 4 quarter could have that much effect. grin.gif
