I believe that there is a counterfeit liberty nickel on Ebay. I've tried to contact Ebay, but I don't know how and so far I have had no luck with them.

Here is the description: and the item number is 8312566392

1882 5C Liberty Head Five Cent, J-1690, NGC PR62 1of 12

PATTERN (RARE) only 11 graded higher. LOW Reserve Item number: 8312566392

would someone be able to check this out, and hopefully some more experienced people on this board will know how to get this taken off.

Thanks,

It is in an NGC slab and looks like homemade pics. It is apattern coin. I dont see what the problem is? The certification number is real. Unless they stole the images and are scamming somebody I dont see a problem.

Well, I am relieved to find that out. I just never heard of an 1882 Liberty before. Maybe I can learn something. What is a pattern coin? I didn't see it in the Red Book, so I paniced.

Thanks.

Official Price guide to Mint Errors by Alan Herbert defines a pattern as:

A coin struck with the intention of demonstrating a proposed coin design that was never adopted, or was not adopted during the year date of the pattern. The planchet may be either in the intended alloy or any other metal or alloy.

Mr Herbert likens finding a pattern coin in circulation to winning three state lotteries on the same day.

Doug, there are many counterfeits on eBay. Do a search for Trade dollars! You can just about take it to the bank that a coin in a NGC holder isn't a fake!

Hmmm, a 1-feedback seller, expensive coin, not a good combo. He takes Paypal, though.

Ask him if he can send you a picture of the coin on top of the front page of today's newspaper, with the date showing.

That's a great piece, if indeed the seller is legit. Everybody has to get started some time, but I'd agree that it's a heck of a coin to be selling for a feedback score of 1. In that seller's shoes, I'd have routed the coin through a dealer with a reputation.

That you for relaying your concerns here on the NGC forums. Other forums may have convicted and executed the ebay seller before finding out the facts. thumbsup2.gif

Scam listings are a very real danger on eBay. Couple weeks ago I was looking at an 1813 $5 with.....something..... wrong with the scene.

I am looking for that type but was just leery and asked seller if he had any NON-EBAY references. Got some gobbledegook response.

Turned out that the WINNING bidder was right at my $4200 +/- intended bid. Contacted winner to offer a profit if he was buying for resale.

His response was that he was contacted by police PRIOR to completing transaction and the coin had been SOLD (and...not...delivered) on a prior auction! BY A DIFFERENT SELLER!

No idea where it stands now. First buyer was out the $2500 (deal) that it sold for on time #1.

Hope BOTH sellers get reamed.

SOMETHING was wrong. I checked his past sales and most were in the $60-$175 range. A high dollar coin from a medium seller is cause for some concern.

Be careful out there.
