Here's my 1873-CC Seated Liberty half

5 posts in this topic

jimbucks posted a thread a couple of days ago regarding his 1873-CC half, so I went ahead and scanned mine last night. Sorry it's not a digital camera image! Tell me what you think of it. Note: this coin is not for sale. I paid $900 for it, and have a customer at $1000. (Click small image for a larger version.) In hand, it has hints of luster hidden in the recesses, but it also has a hint of gloss, which leads me to believe it was very lightly wiped at one time.

The obverse seems to have a good bit of wear that would take it down to the VF30-EF40 range. The reverse doesn't show as much wear and looks more like AU50 details to me.

Based on my experience with NGC gradding 1853 quarters I think they would call it EF45 (like they seem to do with anything grading from VF35-AU55). devil.gif

IMO it's an XF-40/AU-53

So in other words, one very nice XF! thumbsup2.gif

Stick it outside on your window sill for a little while and you'll be rid of your wiping issue. devil.gif

The reverse looks to be substantially more original than the obverse. Of course, this could be entirely due to how the coin scanned. In either event, it is a tough issue and you aren't likely to find many more in this grade range.
