J P M
I was in the Mountains on Sunday and found this posted in the welcome center. I wanted to know if there are any here that may have a piece of this history.

Mr_Spud
I do have this also. When I lived in Charlotte I was in the Charlotte Coin Club and was part of the committee that worked with Jamie Franki to get this medal made. It was great fun. I’ve also been to the gold mine and the river/creek where all the original Carolina gold came from. I have a few small nuggets from there that I panned too. J P M
Very nice coin. Great information Mr-Spud thank for that. It looks like the coin has punch marks like it was being tested to see if it was real ? Mr_Spud
Mr_Spud
Yea, something like that. It might even have been shot by buckshot. I’ve also heard that a lot of them got damaged removing them from the dies they used to strike them because they are so thin and they had to use tools to get them out of the dies but I’m not sure if that’s true J P M

Popular Post RWB
A little side interest --- Dr. R. M. Patterson Superintendent U.S. Mint July 26, 1846 Â Dear Sir, Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The bearer of this, John Bechtler, a resident of Spring Garden and a very steady, industrious, temperate and honest man, is desirous, should a vacancy occur, of getting employment in the Mint in a situation he would be competent to fill. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Mr. Bechtler went away from the City, [southward] three years ago last May and for a part of the time he was about, he was employed at the establishment in Rutherford, North Carolina and understood the manner and modes of work connected with the refining and coining of the precious metals. His cousin, Augustus Bechtler, held a permanent situation at the same place until he died about two years ago. Perhaps he was known to you. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â I commend Mr. Bechtler to your favorable examination. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Very truly yours, Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â J. physics-fan3.14
As a Carolina Boy, I've always wanted one of the Bechtler pieces. Availability, priority, and budget have just never aligned.
