Popular Post Lem E
I would say this is a 1855 Liberty Seated quarter. The S mintmark looks too small though. This could be a fake or altered coin. The coin is so damaged that I can’t tell if there is or was a motto at one point. I might be wrong on the date. Sorry. Popular Post Sandon
This holed, plugged, and otherwise mutilated coin is a Liberty Seated quarter. Quarters of this general type were made from 1838 through 1891. Coins with arrows at each side of the date (but no rays around the eagle as in 1853) were made from 1854-55 and again from 1873-74, in each case to reflect a change in the official weight. The remnant of the arrow on the left side of the date narrows the date range that far. However, @Lem Ewas mistaken in his initial opinion that it is an 1855-S, as the "S" mint mark on the reverse beneath the eagle (indicating that the coin was struck at the San Francisco mint) was much larger on coins dated 1855. The size, style and position of the mint mark match that of an 1873-S, Briggs die variety 1-A. What is confusing is that Liberty Seated quarters dated 1866 and later have a scroll above the eagle bearing the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST", which isn't visible on your photos, probably because of the amount of damage. While an undamaged 1873-S quarter (a better date) with this amount of wear ("Good" grade) would have a current retail value around $100 per Coin World, yours is so badly damaged that it's not worth much more than its silver value, which if it were un-holed would be about $4. FYI, here's what an undamaged, higher-grade specimen of the 1873-74 arrows subtype looks like, this one an 1874 grading about uncirculated from my own collection: Edited December 3, 2022 by Sandon JessieJo, GoldFinger1969, Lem E and 3 others
