1858 Canada (20 cents) - rare?

There is one that is very rare. It is a double punched narrow 9 in the date with the 9 over an 8. You probably need magnification to see it. But, if your dad had one, it is a coin that probably should be slabbed before selling it. As this would bring more money when and if you do part with it. Bob [supertooth]

They're not rare, but they are worth a bit. How much depends on the condition.

Like the US 20c that came later, the Canadian 20c wasn't a wanted denomination and was close enough in size to the US 25c and British shilling (which also circulated in Canada) to cause confusion. Quite a few were melted and the silver was used to make Canadian 25c coins. There is a thread here on the amount of them that survived. It should still be on the first or second page. Check it out. There's also a couple pictures in the thread that might give you an idea of your coin's conditon.
