Any info on 43 cent on dime planchet?

Last week I took a trip back in time when I visited a small local dealer. His shop is an old converted workshop beside his home. He is an elderly gentleman, my guess around 85. His shop is stuffed so full that there is barely room for a single countertop and a stool. The shelves are lined with ammo boxes filled with various rolls, and the usual stacks of partially filled whitmans and binders of G-VG common date silvers. I spent a good long time chatting and looking through junk before I got to the nice coins that were not initially offered. While talking, I offered a few of my nicer pieces for consideration, and out came the blue book. He had a nice Oregon with a little rub I tried to trade for, and it was offered to me at Gem BU Redbook. grin.gif Once we got past the IQ test, we talked for quite awhile about his numismatic career, and I was thoroughly blown away when he casually mentioned once owning 5 of the 8 known 43 Lincolns struck on dime planchets. He showed me an old article from the local paper along with a receipt for his purchase of the last one from W.Breen. I had never heard of these coins, and would love some corroboration. Can one of you Lincoln guys fill me in? I look forward to our next visit. The stories are fabulous.

Hi Don. Sorry I missed you at Charlotte. I was there Friday and Saturday. Along with a zillion other people. I thought it was a good show. I spent to much. I bought a superb NGC MS65RB 1868 2 Cent Piece. No carbon spots, more red than brown. Not that the color mattered. Hope you had a great show too. mdwoods

Man, I hate it too. I had intended to get back down Friday, but when I got home, work found me and I ended up stuck. I did have a great time though, and wish I had been able to stay one more day and meet everyone. Sounds like you found a fun coin. I'd love a pic sometime. wink.gif

There is a sticker on the back of the slab that says the coin is NGC Imaged. Once I figure out how to find it, I should be able to use the photo they have. It's probabaly a good one. mdwoods

Hi Don, I once owned a 1943 silver cent. Back in the mid 90'S I collected off metal error coins. I sold the coin in a teletrade auction in 96 or 97, I don't recall the exact year. I got $750 for it. I sure wish I had it today and have been sorry I ever sold it. It was slabed XF45 but I don't remember what slab it was in. I would have to guess ANACS as most my errors were ANACS.

Thanks for your post it brought back a treasured memory.

Nick
