Just another plated penny question

Hello All! Thanks for taking the time to help me with this. I have a 1942 penny that appears to have been plated in something. The plating is very thin and the edges are not plated. Weight is 3.159g or 48.76gn. It is slightly magnetic but not like a steel penny that jumps on the magnet. The edges are not magnetic. At first glance the color appears to be silver but in the right light, it has a silvery bronze tone. This may be from the plating wearing down? You can see where some of the plating has chipped off the reverse. I included a photo comparing the edges to another 1942 penny with the subject being the top coin. Is this just another high school experiment?
