I think you need to venture out into artificially toned coins also Errorists. Those are also hot right now and a total waste of money to any collector that has the least bit of brain power. A very logical extension for you to consider collecting.

Now a coin expert is telling me it's a rare hubbed in debris error. Could be. Those errors look similar to die gouges too.

It looks like it could possibly be a hubbed in debris.  While this is a more unusual error, rare doesn't necessarily equal value.  Other than a catchy name to hype it, there isn't a lot of wow factor.

Which expert are you talking to?  Weinberg? Byers? Sullivan? Diamond?

I kinda liked a few coins with die cracks to some degree when I first started collecting. Then everywhere I look I see all these crazy names for them and its completely turned me aginst them: Wounded deer. Spike head George. Speared buffalo   Crackhead Jeff.  Crippled eagle. Its ruined it for me. Espically when I see people online charging a high premium for them. I still think some of the major cracks are pretty neat. But all these spitting animals and crippled eagles and things are not my thing. I get tired of seeing every die crack get a cute little name. But if thats what your into then thats great. Im happy for the people who are into them but it gets old seeing all the names for every little spot on a coin. Espically when someone is trying to give it name to try and make it sound like its really something and make a premium off them. To me they will always be defects. And Ive thrown some back in the change jar before. I need to start slinging them out in the yard when I find them so it will be one less coin someone cant take advantage of someone with on etsy or ebay

I guess your right. PF-70s and MS-70s are still flawed..

The ANA says MS-70 is the perfect coin.  They say nothing about about die defects.  So this falls into a gray area.  Technically if it meets all of the other criteria, it could called MS-70, but IMO, the minor cracks, and die defects are flaws.

I believe many non error collectors feel the same way and be hesitant to pay high MS-70 premiums for modern coins with die defects when they can but a perfect coin. Maybe an error specialist would make the stretch, but in general, I believe coins like this would be discounted from the perfect MS-70 market values.

It's all about what's market acceptable, not acceptable on a technicality.

Yeah I've seen a few examples of PF-70 proof error coins. Actually, own one. In reality there is no perfect coin.

@Hoghead515  I am with you.  I thought (and still think) die cracks and gouges are neat.  Like you said, the naming conventions and hyping of the coins is a big turn off.  That said, I have some of this type of common, beginner-fascination coins in 2x2s in a binder.  I talk to a lot of young people (ages 7-13) about coins to promote the hobby.  I talk about "defects" in coins (notice that I a not calling them errors), because things like die cracks and plating blisters are interesting to kids, and help them understand more about coinage.  I don'y really hype anything at all - just encourage kids to look closely at change.

One example I can call out is the 2000 wounded eagle sac dollar. I think its crazy the premiums are so high because someone named it. Its just a simple die crack that goes through the eagle. Its cool if people like that kind of stuff but there are literally hundreds of other coins I would buy before I paid that kind of a premium for a simple die crack. Just because someone hyped it up by naming it wounded eagle. Im with Neo. Its still fun to look for them and have kids search change for them but all the hype has turned me away. I dont really see the need to try and name every little defect. They are so numerous and it just confuses new collectors and makes them think they are something special.

The 2000 Wounded Eagle isn't a die crack. It's a die gouge thus making it a variety. Anyways, I collect the ones that look funny to me sort of like parody coins. Except these parody coins are made by the US Mint.. 😆 🤣 😂

Crack or gouge. Not much difference to me.

By all means, quote Fred Weinberg’s words directly in endorsing your so called expert.

Dumb names for die imperfections

To the gentleman who once commented that the dies used to mint French 20-franc gold roosters were inferior, the proof is in the pudding. Over 100 million made; no hits, no runs, no errors, etc.

In the past year, at least, there have been some of these so called 'newbies' who make Oak Island look like a rerun of Macbeth.   :slapfight:

I keep asking how these dumb 💩 brothers got so rich. The treasure hunter gene must truly be a nasty mutation.

Or the Ark of the Covenant, or a club meeting in progress of the Knights Templar? Maybe the firm that will certify our latest troll’s 1982-D small date copper? Maybe it’ll be run by large-eyed gray skinny dudes from the Alpha Centauri system.
