Was told by a reputable coin grader this may be a die scratch instead of a strike through. ??? What say you guys? To me it looked like a die crack..

A reputable coin grader told you this?/  That doesn't sound right to me.  There's a big difference between a die scratch and a struck thru.

Does the line extend onto the rim or the Buff? I don't like how it seems to fade towards the buffalo's, ahem, rear and it seems very straight. Could be the pic though. I'd go with scratch.

What's the name of this one, by by [breakfast] bovine?

Where the field and rim intersect.

How about posting decent pics? That would help a lot. And scratches/cuts made on an angle cause a raised area as the metal is displaced at an angle as well.

The incomparable Ken Potter.

This guy :frown: . I have read and seen several of his presentations and he seems to be a very intelligent numismatist. Why he wants to fuel the fire of the fantasy error craze, and publish books like strike it rich with pocket change, is beyond me. It’s causing way more harm than good to this hobby. And my oh my the hard lessons to come for some of these collectors spending decent money on these common as dirt coins is going to be a tough pill to swallow. The only way there is a market is to continue to keep recruiting new people to collect them that don’t know better. It’s the ponzy scheme of numismatics.

Ken Potter really needs to stop his whole shtick. He’s a menace.

Do you guys believe Ken Potter actually consulted on the OP's coin?

No, and not that you asked, but the OP’s coin is merely a scratched impaired proof. The scratches are literally EVERYWHERE - on the fields and even on the HIGHEST relief of the bison. It’s purely a damaged coin. Error “fanbois” must NEVER be used as reliable sources. This mania over errors is literally insane.

I’m not sure what you mean by error “fanbois”. But there are numerous error collectors and dealers who are extremely reliable sources of information.

You need to post some decent pics and this can probably be resolved very quickly. I assume you post this at an angle to enjoy some debate. It’s really not needed. And if you can’t tell for yourself if a coin is damaged you may be in the wrong hobby. No consulting needed for that. The errorist, it would stand to reason, would know errors fairly well.

By “fanbois” I mean those who are emotionally invested in errors that may be BS. Specifically, I mean Potter and Wexler.

Agreed. I think true mint errors are an interesting part of numismatics, and I have nothing but respect for those specialists. What I cannot stand is the current madness around superficial or concocted errors. All the state quarters with cutesy names with youtube videos pumping up their rarity for example. They turn a simple small die break that is just a common as dirt occurrence into the spectacular. If they would look at dimes for the last few years they would have a heart attack and think they hit the jackpot because it seems the majority have die breaks. A true error specialist would also laugh at that. What bothers me most is the vim and vigor that this group of new collectors believes in the validity. I really think it is very harmful to this hobby. If they want to collect errors, then collect errors. This is poised to turn away a bunch of collectors from the hobby when reality sets in, and I think we have a duty to at least educate them. If that is what they want to do fine, but it should be done from a place of knowledge and understanding not delusions of grandeur.

This impaired proof that was likely found in circulation that started this thread is a prime example. Instead it has to become a strike through or a die scratch. Logically the two things can not even be possibilities. Why do so many insist on making the mundane rare in some way? I just don't get it.

And while those with an emotional or rooting interest are bad enough, those with a pecuniary interest are truly disgusting. And I say that as a man who will be manning a table at Summer F.U.N. (the ANA’s table) that will be back to back with CONECA’s.

I will have to buy you lunch one day and meet at summer fun. Table assignments haven't been made yet but I will be around somewhere.

The incomparable Ken Potter viewed the coin personally then sent it back to me.

They already know what the club table layout will look like. It changes VERY little.
