Coin Show Report - Parsippany, NJ

3 posts in this topic

I went to the monthly, 80-dealer show in Parsippany, NJ today. As I've mentioned in the past, this show is very busy and it's usually very hard to get down the aisles, because it's so crowded.

Today the show was a bit quieter than usual. I think that some folks were still at Long Beach, as there were two empty tables and a couple of dealers I had never seen before filling other tables. Floor traffic was quieter than usual, although it was still a bit difficult to get down the aisles at about 10:30.

I talked to Jeremy and Jon Lerner, but the rest of the usual crowd didn't seem to be around.

I thought that, although dealer's cases were pretty full, their inventory was less interesting than six months ago - so nothing caught my eye today.

I talked to a couple of dealers who were upbeat about the market, but overall the show today had the feel of "I'm tired and looking forward to quiet time in the summer."

Are local, smaller, shows picking up? Sure seems so. Even with this show being a bit slower than normal, it sure is better than the reports of local shows several months ago. Seemed like nothing but complaints of small crowds and dealers leaving early. I talk to a coin dealer who does shows in the New Hampshire and Maine area. I was surprised at the attendance he described. So, I consigned some coins and most have sold so far, and it's been only about a month!

Considering the very low cost of doing small shows, I find them to be a good place to set up and sell. There are about a half-dozen local shows here in the St. Louis and Springfield (IL) area that I have excellent success at.
