That is because a large candy bar was only a nickel all the good stuff was a nickel . Soda candy, coffee, crackerjacks and did not go up in price to a dime until the 70's.

Evidently someone put a dime in the machine and hoped to get change back...... :facepalm: Regardless... that is one cool old candy machine for sure!!
