How was Long Beach?

20 posts in this topic

Didn't see anyone from this or any other forum I belong to.

I'm sure I would have enjoyed it much more if I collected U.S. coins. It was the lightest attendance I have seen at a Long Beach show, both in the number of dealers and the number of visitors, although there were probably more visitors today than I saw on Friday.

Usually I've had at least 5-6 dealers to spend some time with looking at their Japanese material, but this time there were only two that had more than a token amount of stuff that interested me, and only one of them was at all knowledgeable in my area of interest. I did pick up a few items, incluidng a Meiji 4 5 sen with an interesting die break, but I've had much better luck at previous shows.

The show was slow. Not many people. It seemed very light today and Thursday was light also. A lot of dealers seemed to just be going thru the motions. It sounded like many didn't expect the show to do well and were mildly happy when it did better than their very low expectations.

The US stuff was basically the usual stuff with less nice looking material sprinkled around than usual.

The grading service booths seemed more quiet than in the past.

Overall not much fresh material. Only good thing is that with the Euro falling there were more coins for US buyers as it became more expensive for foreign buyers.

I got off to a slow start buying just one keeper on Thursday but added six more today, have a look:

Fairly common coin but very nice and with some attractive color. I just can't resist these, 2 marks are fast becoming my favorite denomination of German Imperial coinage.

Some planchet issues but an unirculated coin. Great strike for the issue!

Ferdinand II is my favorite Hapsburg but his coins are kind of tough to find. Many, many were made into debased coinage during the 30 Years War.

Two are better than one.

Semi prooflike with light cameo contrast. It's a gem.

Greg an I always have the same discussion regarding coins that look like this.

Me: "What do you think?"

Him: "Nice, but I wish the toning was a bit lighter around the rims"

Me: "Really? I think it looks awesome - I'm goniog to buy it.

Not a real high grade (64ish) but I do love the look.

This one is supurb. Lovely color and very high grade. Bought for a smidge under Krause. thumbsup2.gif

As always, comment are welcome - even Greg's routine dissing of my coins. headbang.gif

I forgot to add, why not play "guess the grade"? They're all going to NGC so I'll post the grades when they get back.

I'll hold off on revealing my grades since I have the advantage of having them in hand.

Considering your lunch offer in both forums this is surprising. Maybe the Dutch treat scared them.;) Hope to see you at the ANA show.

edit: this post submitted itself, I hate when this happens. sumo.gif

JamminJ, that Saxony 2 mark is stunning! thumbsup2.gif

I'd say MS66 for this. grin.gif

Let's see about the others, I can't grade the ugly ones so I'll go straight to the ones I know:

1861 florin: MS65

1838 gulden : MS64 for the spot on his hair

1843 gulden : MS66

Just stay away from Greg ,he'll dip them! poke2.gif

C'est fantastique mR JamminJ. smile.gif

Given the way the EU is running, I wouldn't bet against an 85c to Euro in the next couple of years.

The second Ferdinand II looks like it is worn. I bet it doesn't go MS.

I agree, there's too much wear on the reverse, the obverse looks ok.

I'll pass on the euro comment this way, but if I were you I wouldn't write it off so quickly. I'll save the heated discussion for San Francisco. makepoint.gif

Robert Van Beeber had some early Japanese gold coinage in NGC holders. Among these was an 1870 gold 20 yen (a $30,000 coin). 893whatthe.gif

It looks like all thre regulars* have replied, so here are my grades for the coins:

1909 Saxony 2M: MS66

1673 Austria 6k: MS61 - Crummy planchet holds it back.

1628 Austria 3k: MS62

1633 Austria 3k: AU55 - Could see an MS holder but probably shuoldn't. It's alsways tough to tell wear from strike on these but I think this one circulated

1861 Austria 1F: MS65

1838 Bavaria 1G: MS64 - A few to many hits to go any higher.

1843 Nassau 1G: MS66 - I hope NGC finds the toning as attractive as I do.

As for dipping, they all look very nice as is except the Florin. It has a bit of attractive color towards the rims but is overall hazy which hides the nice reflectivity of the surfaces.

I'm honoured, thanks for the welcome. Sorry, I forgot the emoticon next to the ugly ones and it was too late. 27_laughing.gif

You're not going to resubmit a 66, are you? screwy.gif

I'll hang onto it as is for now. If ever I want to try to cross something over to NGC it may go along to meet the 5 coin minimum. I also prefer having them all in uniform holders.
