Being that this coin has been in circulation for 75 years...... there is no telling when, with what, or how this damage occurred.  Being that it doesn't look like a fresh impact to the 6, and the surface has naturally browed back to its normal color, my guess is that this happened quite some time ago.

I'm with Jonathan and Bob....definite impact damage and I agree with GBrad, it happened quite some time ago.  It's just a damaged Wheatie...there are a lot of them out there.
