I saw where NGC updated the census as of June 1st.

I had a coin grade right at the end of May. It was actually shipped back to me on the 31ST of May. Anybody have a clue if this coin would have made it into the updated census? Will NGC be able to tell me if I call them Monday? Thanks,

Jerry----I happened to look and they had updated it on the 30th. Then I looked again on the 1st and it had been updated again. So I would say there was a chance that your coin would maybe have been included in that last update. But that"s just a guess on my part. Bob [supertooth]

This raises a question for me. I picked up my 2001-D Kennedy, MS64, "Clad Layer Missing" from NGC on May 24, but there is no special listing for this error. NGC has listed the WI 25c High and Low Leaf with pops of 1300-1400+. Why wouldn't they show a listing for a coin that is considerably rarer that may only have a pop of 100 or less. Does this make sense to anyone?

Well, no one has said my coin missed the update, so I'm thinking hopeful.

NGC does not list Mint Errors in the census.

If that is the case, why is the WI 25c High and Low Leaf listed? You're not going to tell me that the Mint did this intentionally, are you?

It doesn't soumd like everyone at NGC is on the same bandwagon unless they can explain the differences between Mint errors and Mint varieties?

As anyone can see NGC list the varieties. We consider High Leaf and Low Leaf Wisconsin Quarters as Varieties. Whether the coins were made intentionally (which is very likely) or they were mistakes is beside the point. A half dollar missing a clad layer is an error of which only few might exist cannot be compared a die variety that tens of thousands or more were struck.

A variety goes by the die characteristics that are repeated on the coins as they are struck. For instance a Repunched Mintmark, a Double Die, a Repunched Date, etc are all die varieties these same characteristics can be found on coins struck by that die. Die varieties go beyond that point when dealing with series such as Bust Half Dollars, Large Cents, and other series where each die can be identified by unique characteristics. This holds true for the Wisconsin Quarters since the dies the struck them can be identified by their unique characteristics of having either a “extra leaf high” or and “extra leaf low”. A mint error is something that can involve a number of factors, planchet, strike, processing at the mint, etc. While some mint errors repeat the majority of them are unique. Die mint errors include die breaks, die clashes, and die damage. While these forms of errors can be found repeated, few are worthy of being considered errors since they are a normal process of the dies life and the mint doesn’t deem these mistakes on their part. Those that are considered errors are often significant, such as a massive die break or major die damage. These may be repeated on dies and can be considered either varieties or errors. At NGC we will sometimes give them the Mint Error attribution but when the coin is accepted by the numismatic community as a variety such as the “extra leaf” quarters we will give them variety status.
