I'm trying to help determine a fair price to pay for an XF example and an AU example, as well as any recommended sources.

Many thanks.

If your friend is abroad, he may wish to check out "MA-Shops - The World's Most Trusted Numismatic Marketplace," a consortium of coin emporiums in France and Germany (ma-shops.com) and Chards coin, based in Blackpool, UK, both of which maintain an on-line presence.

I’ve been to Chard’s. Looks like a phone bank boiler room.

Yes, I believe that Ringram coins in England has one, or at least one on their list at a favorable price for an EF or so coin. These come with rather poorly struck obverses so don't be alarmed.

Hello Mark,

The 1879 pops up now and again in the usual auctions - both U.S. and international. 7Jags lead is a good one. I will send you photos of a AU50 that you may make an offer on from an overseas collector. It is in a PCGS slab - are you looking for slabbed or raw?
