DudeW
Hello there coin World. I have a few questions about a magnetic 1944 Nickel. It has a low Density of 8.54 compared to the normal 9.25 of the Wartime Nickels, it is also magnetic. Edited March 26, 2021 by DudeW

DudeW
Would an electroplating make the silver nickels magnetic ? Here is a nice article about a zinc plated steel 1944 P that was found. The 2 Franc planchets where used in Philadelphia during 1944. https://www.coinworld.com/news/precious-metals/1944-p-5-coin-struck-on-zinc-coated-steel-pla.html Edited March 27, 2021 by DudeW

War 5-cent 8.662 Clad 8.945 Lg copper cents 8.96 (usually lower due to impurities) FE cents 8.953 4.87 g/cu3 mm is impossible for any magnetic metal. That's only a little above Titanium at about 4.51. Edited March 27, 2021 by RWB

PS: The nickel looks circulated and then plated. The kind of "oily" appearance is common for pure nickel plating....but it's certainly not an original US mint-issued product. War 5-cent 8.662 No the silver war nickels are in the 9.25 to 9.32 range. 9.662 would make them less than the regular CuNi alloy. You don't swap out lower density copper and nickel for higher density silver and have the SG go down. Yes the manganese will off set it a little but not that much. And the 4.87 was the weight of the nickel not the density. His measured density was 8.54 g/cm^3 which is still too low.
Modwriter
Im wondering if this nickel would be body bagged by a TPG. The reverse pic is cropped above the steps but what I can see is that it is in poor condtion.

If it was electroplated with nickel, would the overall Density be lower ?

I didn't show my work and made a mistake in counting toes. War nickel alloy at top, standard CuNi alloy below. War nickel density will nearly always be lower due to defects in manufacturing and rolling the alloy and the source of Mn. (Electrolytic was best but not always available.) % Σ Cu 8.96 56 5.02 Ag 10.49 35 3.67 Mn 7.43 9 0.67 D= <9.36 % Σ Cu 8.96 75 6.72 Ni 8.90 25 2.23 D= <8.95 Edited March 31, 2021 by RWB

Greenstang
Damage is not an error. What you have is a damaged coin. In the future, please start your own thread when posting. More than 1 coin at a time just causes confusion.
