I’m a complete newbie. What books to I need to get? I’ve been studying coins, and this is my father’s.

Off hand it looks like damage from the reeding on another coin. A sharp, detailed image would help members decide.

Your image is fine, there are a number of DDR's for 1964 halfs, this website Click Here is the best place for you to check and see if you can find a match.   If you think you have found a match and want confirmation just post again with one you think it is from that website.

From the closeup photo it is clearly not from a doubled die. It looks like circulation damage. I'm sure others will chime in.

Also - don't hesitate to ask questions. Members will be very patient and helpful to anyone who wants to learn.
