1837 No Stars Small Date Half Dime

Can anybody give a guesstimate on what a NGCMS65 would sell for at present market prices? The census is 2. I think there is a 66 also. I want to bid on one, but it's hard to find anything current price wise with such a small census count.

Thanks,

Grey Sheet Ask is $2750.00 for MS65.

NGC has certified over 100 1837 No Stars half dimes in MS65. Most of these are not attributed as small or large dates. I don't think the market really supports a price difference between the two. I think it's safe to go by the greysheet price quoted as a good starting point.

Well, I don't get it. Did NGC not designate the Sm Date and Lg Date at some time? The census shows 1837, 1837 Lg Date and 1837 Sm date. The small date shows 65 2, 66 1, 67 2. PCGS's pop report just has it broken down into Lg Date and Sm Date with very few graded in Sm Date. NumisMedia also just shows a 1837 Lg Date and Sm Date for no stars. So, I don't know.

I would ignore the TPG census for these varieties as NGC has holdered many coins without noting the variety on the holder, hence the column without designation, and PCGS has holdered many coins with the incorrect designation on the label. The market, in general, views these as simply one coin.

Also, PCGS often misattribute this variety so you really can't count on the census.

I love asking questions. Thanks for the help.

Heck PCGS can't even count the Eagle's tail feathers on the reverse of a common Morgan dollar!!!

I own one of the two 1837 half dime in MS66*. I bought it at FUN this year, and paid WAY to much for it. It was in an older NGC holder from before the "star" was given. I submitted it at FUN as I thought (and still do think) it's a shot at MS67. I was hoping to at least get the star designation, which happened. Here's a picture of it for your enjoyment.

I have one of these in an old green PCI holder graded AU50 that I've had a few years. It is listed on the holder as a small date, but it is actually the large date.

Just a little while ago I picked up another on ebay while everyone else was recovering from their holiday. The pics are small but it also looks like a large date though it's not noted on the holder. This one is more in my price range than an MS66*. wink.gif

1837 ANACS MS62

As an added note, I saw one sell earlier today on ebay in a PCGS AU50 holder that went for $374. I think I'll take the one I got for the price. grin.gifyay.gifyay.gifyay.gif

I loved your coin back then, Android, and I love it now! thumbsup2.gif

For some reason I just like the No Star type better than stars. That is one nice looking coin. Thanks,

Great coin!

The No Stars type is my favorite Seated Liberty design. It clean and simple.

I, as a type collector, am drooling all over myself right now!

Even if you paid too much for it, just wait a year or two and you'll be ahead!
