GENTLEMEN, GENTLEMEN.....How about an update on the uncleaned ancients?

They appear to be coming along OK, not great, but OK. I'm actually planning on changing the oil this week. Lots of dirt appears to keep coming off, but not much more detail on the coins.

Not much more detail coming off, or not much more detail remaining? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Take an old (soft) toothbrush to them, rinse them in dish soap and hot water, then put them back in the oil.

Who? Man you ARE kinky!

Make sure you get the soap washed off. Then pat them with a paper towel to remove the excess water before putting them back in the oil.

I've finally removed them from the oil. Some still have dirt and sand so firmly attached to them that I've given up hope.

Today I took them out of the oil, brushed them in soapy water, then boiled them for a few minutes. The oil and soap are gone for good, but some of the dirt is staying forever.

I've been able to make out portraits on three of the small coins, and some others have distinct designs on at least one side. As soon as I can take decent photos I'll put them up for Thingy to ID for us.

Don't feel bad at all. I got what I paid for. I got 1000+ uncleaned ancients. There are a few OK coins, but nothing special. It was fun. And the seller was nice to deal with. He even FedExed me the coins at no additional cost.

Greg et al, I can get these coins for a total of $30.00. Nice uncleaned coins. Do you think it would be worth while to get them slabbed by ICG and sell them individually? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

No idea.

They don't look very high grade. I think VF++ coins would be best to slab. However, I've found some wonderful sellers just by slabbing all sorts of stuff. No one would suspect it'd be a good seller, but they are.

It also depends on the cost of ICG. They're at $16 normal, but they gave me a special deal. I think it's becuase I'm JP Martin's favorite person. devil.gif

What the coin all the way to the right? I like the reverse design.

I still have about 30 sitting in oil......I don't know if I have the time or inclanation to even pull them out to scrub them. All the coins were tiny so even if spotlessly clean....who knows how much detail I would find anyway.

I leave them for another few years.....lol27_laughing.gif
