Westward Nickel Set

28 posts in this topic

Wow! what a crowd at the online mint today. Site is still slow, or maybe it's just Road Runner. I ordered 2 of today's sets (I hope) and it took forever. I was gonna place a 2nd order after and the site wouldn't take it.

I asked NGC if they could slab all the coins and medal into a multi holder and they said they can. So now my question, since these coins today won't ship until June 9 and I'm assuming they will be farther down the production line than the US mint set & proof set, would you crack out the earlier production coins and use them for the slabbed set because they should grade a bit higher, or slab 'em individually and use today's (presumed) lesser quality examples for the set?

I'm not sure what you're asking, but if one were to bother slabbing the Westward Journey sets, I'd certainly select the highest quality coins for the set, no matter where they came from. As for the medals - good luck! Most are in wretched shape.

I bought 5 of these sets to hedge my bet the same way that the 2004 set went. Since only 75K of these sets are being made, I reckon it'll be worth the short-term investment. Personally, I can't stand the sets, but I sold all of the 2004 sets I bought (from a dealer at $25 a crack) for $50. insane.gif

Oh I wish you hadn't mentioned the nice profit there. Now I'm sad I only got 2 ordered. frown.gif

I just bought the 2004 set on eBay last week for $23 so it looks like I just got lucky there, at least. I like the look of the mint pack but many here have discussed why mint packaging is not safe.

Call me dense, go ahead...:P How would you know the medals in these sets are in wretched shape if they are not shipping yet? Is this based upon last years set?

Thanks for your answer.

Yep, I based my comment about the medals on last year's set. They were not encapsulated (and it looks like this year's are not either) and came with all kinds of scuffs, scrapes, dings, and fingerprints. It was unfortunate. Also, the silver plating over bronze made them look very mushy. I'd be quite surprised if anything has changed. In fact, I'd be surprised if the medals for the 2005 sets were not produced at the same time those of the 2004 sets were. I reckon we'll see.

If I were actually collecting one of these sets, I'd not settle for anything but a set with a mark-free medal from the Mint.

That is a real shame. I would expect them to be encapsulated. Maybe I should be thankful they did not let me purchase 5 today? foreheadslap.gif

I had the same problem - and it was slow as molasses. I gave up and called my order in, which took all of a couple minutes.

I hope to have all of mine sold very shorltly after receiving them. smile.gif

According to the May 23 article in Coin World, the medals are the same as those produced last year.

The Mint website is now working properly. Processed my order in just a few seconds.

FYI: The Medal Sets are on backorder until June 9 which means that you probably won't receive them until the fourth week of June if you opt for "Standard Shipping". But, if you are ordering other Mint items at the same time, you may want to opt for "Expedited Shipping". It costs $17.90, but it also means that you will get the in-stock portion of your order in two days AND, when the Medal Sets become available you will get them on an expedited basis, too. Just a suggestion for you to consider.

BTW Hoot, do you have any connection to Pace Airlines? I just heard a radio commercial over the net while I was posting and it got me to wondering.

To be more accurate, they aren't selling at the moment due to back order. As others have said, when you try to check out it says call customer service. I think they would have sold out, but apparently the mint can only handle 25,000 orders at a time. laugh.gif

I don't think you'll get stuck. If if comes to it I might be willing to take one or two off your hands if I can't get my order filled.

Yep! Ditto.

I ordered ten sets in Jan because I was truly excited about the medal. Once received, I was sorely disappointed. So, I sold all ten sets as a lot on ebay and made $300 profit.

Since the mintage is tripled on these sets and the medals are so ugly, I decided to pass on this "wonderful opportunity" this time around.

I don't think that these sets will see much potential. I did order five sets of the first day cover for the bison nickels. 100,000 ceiling. These may have potential, if not then I'll just give them out as presents.

ATTN: Boardsters: I will invest fairly heavily in the Marine Corp dollar commems coming out. These will always be in demand! the USMC is the only branch where they are enlisted for life. You know, once a marine always a marine. This does not translate to the Navy, however. It's just not the same ring when you say, "Once a squid always a squid". Thank goodness that this isn't true! yeahok.gif

That is my plan with these. If they don't pan out, I'll be giving them as Christmas presents. wink.gif

I am sorry that I missed the release of the ones last year. By the time I got the e-mail that they were on sale, they were sold out. I think that is their trick. Last year they made them scarce, 25K, so they went up in value right away. This year, they made 75K and hope that people believe they will go the way of last year's and go up in value. But since they made 3X as many, people will be sorely disappointed. But, 75K is still a pretty low number compared to other items. Of course, next year they will revert back to only making a low number and then the next year a high number again. It is all a game to them.

What do others think about this? 893blahblah.gif

It does nothing for me. 75K scarce? What about the 19th century proof type coins? Many of them have mintages of less than 600 and are very reasonably priced. That excites me, not 75K of a modern mintage.

I have the 1915 PanPac gold dollar in ms63. Only 15000 were sold. But, why is it still so cheap? No demand is why. They have appreciated some in the last two years, however. Still, I would much rather put my money in these issues.

I am just 10 coins away, though, from completing a complete set of modern silver dollar commemoratives. These are cool and do capture my interest. I think that some of the keys with 15,000 mintages are overpriced but that is what the market demands.

According to an item in the May 30 issue of Coin World , the Marine Corps commem will also be paired with the John Marshall commem as a special set in addition to individual sales.

I just ordered 2 so they are taking orders again after all (not that I doubted you). From the sounds of things I too wonder if I'm making a mistake now. Still, I think mom would like one because she loves the Sac $1 and a friend at her work is a nickel lover and I think she'll like the look of these as a starter.
