Disappointing new purchase.

I was very disappointed in one of my most recent purchases. An NGC AU-58 1877 IHC. The coins description stated that it had sharp headress and diamond details. Upon inspection, it was very easy to tell that nothing could have been further from the truth. The feathers in the headress were sorely lacking in details from mid-feather to the tip and as to the one and only diamond present on the ribbon, well need I say more ! This purchase was an initial purchase made from a reputable dealer. Naturally, I`ll be returning the coin immediately !

How is it ? That the description could be so far off ! I mean, even with the naked eye one can discern that a single diamond doesn`t constitute sharp diamond details. This is a well known professional dealer. Perhaps they have certain loupes that are strictly for examining IHC`s and these loupes have the four diamonds engraved on the lenses. I can fathom no other plausible explanation for such an extreme variance from the description. Personally, I would have described thhis coin as NGC AU-58 1877 IHC weakly struck. I mean even the reverse details were poor. The shield lines were merged, almost to the point of being blended together without distictive seperation. Weakly struck is also the only explanation I can come up with for why NGC would assign such a lofty grade to this disappointing specimen. frustrated.gif

You can place the blame on many of these big wig auction houses who love to go overboard with outlandish descriptions; Heritage, Bowers and Merena, Superior galleries are a few of the culprits well known for this kind of hype with coins. They do it unto the unsuspecting collecting public and unfortunately many others have followed suit, even the TGS as a matter of fact! Everything can't grade MS66 and MS67!

3 Day return policy from date of receipt for certified coins. I was amazed that a well known reputable dealer would be so far from the mark ! Correspondence from the dealer was very apologetic. Stated that they would inspect the coin personally, and modify their description. I won`t count them out of the game just yet. But, This was surely strike one. I don`t mind paying a premium price for a high quality coin that I like, I just expect to receive what I pay for.

Hey, if you're a minnow, then I'm a copepod. crazy.gif

Glad the dealer was quick to act and seemed to with grace and authority. Hope this all works out for you inn the best way. Sight-unseen purchases are always risky at best.

I know how you feel. A lot of this hobby is still a [#@$%!!!]-shoot, despite TPG grading, pictures and dealer reputations. Much dealer mentality is still "round em up and move em out" and don't worry too much about what you are selling. I also have gotten some clinkers from big name dealers. Anyhow, you have my sympathy.

Tell me about it!

I just had 7 of 8 coins rejected for improper cleaning which I got from various dealers. Guess it goes to show that rookies need to be careful because not everyone in this business tells the truth. sigh

The bigger downside, now I'll be putting them up for auction myself to try & "move 'em out," though I intend to mention the cleaning and just hope for the best.
