What you're looking at is one of the Jeffs I sent to TT for auctioning. When I got their email giving the auction it would be in, I checked it out.

First, here is the auction page. http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=2045&lot=1125

Here is what the coin looks like with the enlargement.

As you can see, there is a big mark or shadow of something on the obverse over Jeffs upper collar. I called customer service, and they said they would replace it. This was Thursday. As they are closed weekends, I was hoping it would be fixed no later then Friday evening. As lots of bidders/buyers on TT peruse future auction coins for their watch list (as I do), I was concerned interested people would see this mark and discard any notion of bidding on it as it is displayed. Now that it hasn't been replaced and the weekend is here, it won't get done til Monday at least.

Now I'm really quite upset. Leaving it as it is for three days or more, who knows how many that were interested in it saw it as it is and passed it over! And who knows if they'll return to it even after the pic gets replaced!

Past 45-S NS66FS Jeffs sold for over $800. so good money is at stake here! Am I upset and worried for no reason? Would it make a difference to you if you were interested or if it were your coin? (It would to me!).

Any suggestions from people with TT experience greatly appreciated!

I see what you're saying. I would probably assume that it was a toning mark vs. a shadow. Good eye.

p.s. What makes it so special? Is it fullsteps?

Hey Victor,

Yep, FS is the only attribute that makes a 45-S worth $500, $600, $700+ aside from varieties. Would you consider bidding on it if you thought it was a tone mark? I wouldn't simply because it isn't at all what I would consider a eye appeal tone.

It does kind of look like a counting wheel mark. (I know it isn't.)

You're right to be concerned, especially regarding your theory of bookmarking coins earlier in the week and then simply placing bids the day of.

I'd hate to see that one sell for much less than its value based on a poor photo.

Hi David - I understand your concerns, but given the angle of lighting, knowing the contours of Jefferson's coat, and given the color of shadows on the coin in other places, this would not worry me if I were bidding.

Fortunately, they did change the pic this morning. I feel better with a more accurate pic but my concerns about potential bidders having already seen the first bad one, will now not return to it for this auction. Once I looked thru the auction listings (and I almost always did as soon as they were listed with pics), I made my selections for watching and/or bidding and placed them on my watch list. Hopefully, not too many have done this for the 45-S and negated any interest because of the mark. confused-smiley-013.giffrustrated.gifChristo_pull_hair.gif

Thanks for your help guys! thumbsup2.gif Hope it does well along with the 56 MS66FS. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif
