Making those alterations are the only way it could get into a U.S. cent roll, because the U.K. decimal-era penny is quite a bit larger in diameter to a cent. Not as big as the pre-decimal, you could hurt someone with those, but still bigger.

Just sad, cause they only made like 500k of that coin from what I read

U.K. coins can be a little confusing. Some years they completely skip certain denominations for circulation and the only way to get those years is in uncirculated sets. Especially true in 5p and 10p.
