Proof SAE's

On the website for the American Precious Metals Exchange, www.apmex.com, you can buy a (1986-2005) set of the Eagles, NGC Proof 69 for $575, and the same set graded by PCGS is $995. 893whatthe.gif Can anyone give me a valid reason why the PCGS set should cost $420 more? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif And, don't tell me it's just because of the 2005 "Millennium Edition". devil.gif

There's widespread belief that PCGS is overall tougher on grading and the plastic that's wrapped around the coin with the letters "P-C-G-S" on it is worth more money.

Chris----From talking to me, you know that I collect half dollars---Walkers mostly. But I have looked at an awful lot of slabbed coins in my day. For some reasons personal feelings always seem to enter the opinions in today"s times. Some folks just naturally want to believe that PCGS is better. Others favor NGC. Some even will buy from others due to various reasons. But, never in my life, does it make sense to me for someone to pay so much for just one point on a modern coin. How can anyone think, with grading being the subjective thing that it truly is, that "ANYONE" can sit there and honestly tell me that a PCGS 69 is somehow that much more valuable than a NGC 69? If it had somewhere to go, say to a 71 or 72, then I could see getting excited over a possible difference between 69"s. But when there is nowhere to go, it would seem that pretty much "all" the best coins would end up as 69 coins. No matter who slabbed them. But, for me, it will always be----buy the coin and not the holder. If people told the truth, they would not be worrying over whether the new coins are 69 coins or not. They would be concerned over the overgraded and hairlined coins and dipped coins that are constantly ending up in those same "NOBLE" PCGS and other holders. And I constantly use the 21S Walker as an example. In grades of XF and above, there are probably more washed, rubbed, scratched, hairlined, dipped, dented, or cleaned or messed-with coins in holders than there are truly original pieces. Not too long ago, at a Baltimore show, I must have looked at probably a dozen 21S Walkers. Only one coin out of the bunch was original---IMHO--- but "ALL" of them[but one] were in PCGS or NGC holders. And, then the dealers get mad at you when you call it to their attention----like you should never notice it cause it is in "THAT PRECIOUS HOLDER". Now---to be completely fair, there were many more PCGS slabs than NGC slabs. So, I give a more honest nod to NGC but I also saw a Segs XF45 that really was a nice uncleaned VF20. And when you are paying from hundreds to many thousands of dollars for these slabbed coins, do we or shouldn"t we have the right to expect more than we are getting from these TPG companies?? For me, I would worry much more over this kind of stuff than over whether a modern coin is a 69 or a 68 or a 70. This is my "ranting" for the day. So, if I wanted the set of 69 coins [which I don"t], I would gladly buy the NGC set and save the 400 dollars. For I truly believe that, taken out of their holders, 99.9% of people [probably including me] could not tell the difference between them. Bob [supertooth]

If I was you I would go and buy an ICG set and save even more money 893whatthe.gif

They'll have to be all in ICG 70 holders and priced at "68" levels for me to even consider it. JMHO

I like the look of UCAM SAEs in NGC holders. laugh.gif

FWIW I have two 1991 SAEs in MS69 in NGC and PCGS. IMO, the NGC coin looks nicer. There's a tiny but noticable black spot on the obverse of the PCGS coin. I know its only one coin but based on PNG/ICTA surveys and my personal submitting experiences with both TPGs, as a colIector, I prefer NGC over PCGS.

Yeah, I'd save even more money if I got lucky on one of the silver dollar slots in Reno or Vegas. Please note, the operative words here are "if I got lucky". Sorry, I don't feel lucky with ICG.

I agree with you 100%, Bob. Out of the slab, most people, myself included, wouldn't know the difference. I sure wouldn't pay that much of a premium just because it has a PCGS label.

Maybe i am missing it? But I see the PCGS set there for 549$ with the wood holder box.

Plus a side note those are MS not PR or PF's.

Hey, if anybody sees a head on a street corner acting like it's lost, it's mine! Just kick it toward Southwest Florida. Sorry, I meant MS.

The set you see just above the NGC set is "Gem BU", not MS69. Maybe they sold out of PCGS?

I am a big fan of SAE's, both proof and business strikes, because I think they are a beautifully designed coin (yes I consider them a coin and not merely bullion) and it seems that the mint actually cares about the quality of the finished product. I ditto what supertooth said. It is absolute ridiculous that 1 point can mean hundreds or thousands of dollars difference where something so subjective is concerned.

'Zactly! To buy the set raw is $1299 on their website. If you could buy a complete set for under $1000 then I'd jump on it quick. That is a bargain. But, as we all know, if something seems too good to be true then it most probably is.

Their BU set in a Dansco album is way overpriced so why would they sell proofs for below wholesale?
