The Latest in PCGS Registry Set Marketing

5 posts in this topic

I have received (2) emails in the last two days from major dealers offering me the "opportunity" for them to build PCGS Registry Sets for me. Has HRH come up with another stroke of marketing genius? Is this another "first issue" marketing boner, or is this something serious? I was not aware that I had an issue building registry sets, until now. Especially since I have been building them here for (3) years and not over there for about (2) years.

Comments about this latest scheme from my learned associates, please!

PCGS and Heritage have just launched a joint venture where if you open a PCGS registry set via Heritage you will receive additional benefits such as free appraisals, census information, etc..... I just got the solicitation e-mail the other day. The dealers that are contacting you are probably feeding off this.

I think its all marketing designed to increase the space of the PCGS product with some vultures looking to pick up the scraps. More PCGS registry = more demand for PCGS graded coins = more $ for PCGS on crosses, crackouts, etc Heritage benefits as they get the additional comission when two yahoos chase a $20k coin to $95k so they can move up a space on the PCGS registry standings. Dealers are looking to pick up additional revenue by getting that big fat PCGS want list to go after. Sometimes the dealer who is soliciting you (who you don't have a pre-established relationship with) can get you nice coins that you may consider, but with all the swill and over graded [#@$%!!!] that is plentiful in the market place, I would be skeptical. I think more often that not you would just be deliverd a plastic product that has been rejected a dozen times already.......

I received (2) of these "deal" offers, one from Heritage and one from Superior. Besides, Dave Bowers has offered an acquisition program for many years where you can specify what coins in whose holders you want, at whatever amount you wish to spend. I would be a little skeptical of these latest offers because many PCGS coins are overpriced and are not necessarily better quality coins.

I kind of wonder if the "registry" thing is starting to die out a little bit. I know at least a couple of people who participated for a while, and have now bailed out because it wasn't "fun" any more. One of the guys is a Morgan collector who was doing high grade "white" coins. He's dumped all but a few of them, and is working on early type sets now! (non-registry). It just seems to me like the hype has started to wear thin a little.

James: I put many of my coins into registry sets as a method of cataloging as much as for any other reason. The NGC site is very handy for keeping track of sets, cert. numbers and coin inventory in these sets, along with pictures and descriptions of the coins. Many of my sets will never be in the top-5 listing of that registry, but registering the coins allows me to use NGC services and permits others access to look at my sets, if they so desire.

I am remotely located from most dealers and shows. Because of this, and my health restrictions on flying commercially, I can not comment on the popularity level of registries. I have noticed though that there is a steady stream of new sets being added to this site daily.
