What is the average grade from 1960's mint sets?

13 posts in this topic

Using the NGC pop charts for the Franklin Half, the average grade for this period seems to be a bell curve around PR67. I would guess that the other siver coins are about the same. Cents are skewed from PR65 to PR68, with 1968 being the highest pop. You can look at the pops and judge for yourself. However, these are only the coins that are clean enough to submit. So, there is no data on the total population, only NGC slabbed coins.

The average grade would be around MS63.

The pop reports aren't much help for this stuff since no one knowingly submits the dogs.

Do you honestly think they would be that high? 893whatthe.gif Most look like the Mint was attempting to deface them before they left their four walls. makepoint.gif

MastaHanky, are you sure. laugh.gif OK...so its a proof set. Its from a sealed box of 50. Interestingly enough, I've gotten several dozen 71-S Silver Ikes with prints still in the wrapper.

Yep, MS63 is about right. They're banged to hell and back, but that's about the average for an MS63 today. frown.gif

The question is, "Who sealed the box after they cracked the cases?" That '69-S Kennedy is a real dog! I'll bet if you got real close it even smells, too! No offense, Caleb!

This look isn't that uncommon on the 40% silver PF sets. The good news is that it comes off rather easily and hasn't likely damaged the coin. I just purchased 35 of the 1968-70 sets and at least half of them had a similar look to them...of course they also had a cameo look to them. yay.gifyay.gifyay.gif

MS-63 is close on the old silver sets especially if you throw out the really bad ones and the best ones. Over the years though many of these have degraded and a lot of some coins might bodybag. This is a particular problem with some of the later '60's sets.
