My "1861/0" Half Dime from Heritage has arrived.

7 posts in this topic

I recently purchased this Half Dime from a Heritage auction and posted about it here.

The coin showed up yesterday and I am quite pleased. There are several scuffs in the fields that limit the grade, but on such a small coin they aren't very noticable without a loupe. The luster is not booming but it is what I would consider average. The coin is fairly white with a bit of light tone and appears original.

The Breen-3102 is actually about four different varieties according to Blythe in his Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dimes. This one appears to be V-6 which was a recent discovery when the book was published in 1992. It is sometimes called a doubled obverse though I can only see doubling in the legend. The doubling is most easily seen in the word "United" though there are traces of doubling in the rest of the legend.

I managed to take some pictures last night to share.

Do any of you seated liberty guys have any more info on this variety to share? I'm sure many more have surfaced since Blythe's book was published. He listed all "1861/0" varieties as low R6 in MS, but I'm sure it's much lower now.

I think it's a nice coin for the grade.

I'm also impressed by your skill of taking picture. How could you take such sharp images of small coin like that?

I don't know much about this variety, but some specialist think they are a bit over- rated. But I think you did very well considering the price you paid. thumbsup2.gif

Thanks to both of you for the kind comments on the coin. I too think it's a great looking coin for MS60. Try to imagin shrinking that image down to half dime size and trying to see those marks in the field. I'm pretty near sighted and I have trouble seeing them.

For the pictures, I have a digital SLR camera with a 100mm macro lens. The camera has three different image size settings and those pictures of the whole coin were actually taken at the small setting. I did switch to the large setting for the close-ups and then croped the parts I was trying to show. A picture of the whole coin taken at the highest resolution would be quite a bit too big for the screen. grin.gif

If Heritage took the time to take pics like yours they'd be the top dog! thumbsup2.gif

If Heritage took the time to take pictures like these they would have to hire more staff or list far fewer coins. This one really didn't take that long, but sometimes it seems like I'll never get the picture right.

a superb coin and i thought it was a higher grade cloud9.gif than an ms60 thumbsup2.gif

your photography skills are better than excellent thumbsup2.gif and the eye appeal of this coin is way above average for a legend obverse halfdime 893applaud-thumb.gif
