2017 1 oz High Relief Palladium Eagle $25 Coin NGC MS70 FDI Black Core Holder Exclusive U.S. Mint 225th Anniversary Label

7 posts in this topic

I recently purchased a few Palladium Eagles through the pre-sale at Modern Coin Mart. Here is a link to what I purchased > https://www.moderncoinmart.com/2017-1-oz-high-relief-palladium-american-eagle-25-coin-ngc-ms70-fdi-black-core-holder-exclusive-us-mint-225th-anniversary-label.html

The coin came as NGC graded MS70. According to NGC's website https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-grading/grading-scale/  MS70 means:
  • MS: Mint State. Coins struck in the same format as circulation issues. Applies to grades 60 to 70
  • MS/PF70: A coin with no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification.

With that said, take a look at one of the coins I received and tell me what you notice...

ACTUAL COIN I RECEIVED > https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/4600856-016/70/ Now if you compare it to the coin on the US Mint site here >https://www.usmint.gov/coins/coin-medal-programs/american-eagle/palladium-bullion

Do you notice how off-centered it is? Would PCGS grade this as MS70? Probably not. Even though MCM has a strict "NO RETURN" policy they immediately sent me a pre-paid return label, and offered to ship me another coin that is "more perfect", but now I think I should hang on to this and stir the grading pond because I feel this does NOT meet NGC's MS70 level, but why was it graded as such?

What should I do? Should I hang on to it or send it back for another "more perfect" coin...?

Conder101, thank you response. According to the grading scale from NGC I did not need any loupe to see that this was off-center. Either way, I am gonna hold on to this for a bit and see what comes of it.

As I said a mis-aligned die, it is NOT an off-center coin.  The obverse die was not exactly centered in the collar and was very slightly off to one side,  The reverse die appears to be correctly centered.

How does this coin differ from one with a red-core insert -- or a green-core insert --- or just plain?

This is truly a beautiful coin. Please understand that many of these and other modern coins will grade 70. None are 'perfect'. This is why there are many good values in 69 holders.  :wishluck:
