9 posts in this topic

Plz, post your tried and proven ACETONE dip or cleaning method's.

I don't believe in "cleaning", but have heard that an acetone dip and a very careful dabbing w/ a cue tip? Any thoughts?

Thx, as always, just learning. smile.gif

The coin looks like it was buried or fire damaged. I don't think acetone will do much to it. In fact, I'm not too sure what would help that coin. Perhaps a long soak in olive oil to remove some of the dirt, but I wouldn't expect too much.

The coin appears to have been in a fire. If this is the case, acetone will do nothing. In addition, no solvents I know will make the coin lighter in color, only an abrasive scrubbing will remove the top layer of metal. If the color is dark due to grime, use MS70, and most of the grime will dissolve. However, if the coin is stained, again, not many solvents will brighten the coin.

Take a Q-tip and soak it in MS70. Then take the Q-tip and rub the solution onto the coin face while rotating the Q-tip. The grime should come off on the head of the Q-tip. Repeat with new Q-tips if necessary. Soaking doesn't really help in this case. With uncirculated coins, a 10 minute soaking may help.

Ok, here is what i think....it's a ground find, corrosion. I have bad eye sight, so i had to get out all my magnifying glasses and my loupe but the touch is what resolved the question. I am building a G-F set and the only thing i really care about is readable dates. I usually buy slabbed coins but this is my 1st "home built" album. I am also working on a SLQ set but am buying higher grade examples.

Thx 2 everyone that posted a comment! smile.gif
