Mint silver proof sets, mint proof sets and mint sets

25 posts in this topic

I have all of the above for 1999 to present and will be putting them up on eBay soon. Wanted anyones opinion as to how I should do it.

1) List them individually or

2) List all from same year together

My initial thought is to go with individual auctions but I can see reasoning behind putting them together as sets. Where do you think the best money lies?

Thank you for your opinions!

IMHO, listing them together as a group would attract more dealers who would want to pay wholesale or less. Whereas listing the sets individually might attract more collectors who would pay more for nice sets. Also, you might not want to sell too many sets of the same date at one time.

Hi David,

I have a 1999 Silver Proof Set that I have wanted to sell on Ebay, so I have been tracking a lot of those sets in the last week or so. It seems to me from what I’ve seen tracking that you can get the most for the silver sets by selling them individually. The 1999 silver has been going from $270 to $310 mostly, with some sellers turning out to be luckier than others getting that $300 plus bid.

A while back I was tracking some of the other years of state quarter proof sets, both clad and silver. I saw that many of the sets where sold at bid or a few dollars less then bid. With the listing fees, Final Value Fee, and time needed to deal with the auctions I decided to sell them at my local dealer for %10 back of bid and be done with them.

Of course this is just my opinion.

Thank you Charlie. I'm assuming you think I have more then one of each but I don't. Only ordered one of each from the mint thinking I'd never need more then that for me. So no, just one of each to go.

Thanks Paul for your input. Not to worry bout the state quarter sets...I didn't bother with buying any of them from the mint. I'm not interested in them any further then the unc. book I'm filling from change. Lots cheaper this way!

Thank you Charlie. They'll be going up this coming Sunday. Just 1999 thru 2001 and the rest the week after that.

Ditto, Dave.

I would list them individually if you wish to maximize your profit but if you are just selling three years worth then maybe selling as a lot would net close to the same?

Still, I would encourage you to hang on to them but I doubt if the market can sustain much more of a price increase for the '99 and '01 silver sets. So, perhaps you're right that now is the time to sell.

Gee, I just noticed that I sound like a politician with all of this ambivalent talk! foreheadslap.gif

Do you think all this talk about PCGS has rubbed off on you? 27_laughing.gif

I think that you'd be best off listing them induvidially to maximise your profit.

When you do list them, start it off at 1c no reserve and PM me a link devil.gif

If you don't have all of the annual issues, '99-'05, you are probably better off selling individually. Be sure to check your UNC sets carefully as some of the states quarters are selling for a hefty premium in high grades.

Personally, I'm keeping all of mine (including duplicates) to complete the issues through 2008. The Mint is considering adding the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and others in 2009, so I want to see what the future may hold.

Already made the decision to list them individually. I do have all sets up thru 2005 minus the silver proof and unc sets as mint hasn't sent me them yet. May cancel my subscription before they go out.

Hayden, I started them all off at $9.99. I know a few of them are only worth a little more then this, but what doesn't sell, I'll batch up as a package. Using turbolister so they are scheduled to start at 6P.M. Sunday. My user id is david4988 for eBay. Should be able to do a search for my items. Also more slabs, and some other goodies! Every Sunday, at least 20 items will go up.

I spose ya'll deserve some sort of explanation for my selling everything...and I do mean everything. Have health issues that have forced me to take a medical leave of absence from work. Insurance will cover what it will cover but I'll have to assume the rest. I've always been a pessimist at heart so if I prepare for the worst and less happens, I'm happy. As I am pessimistically looking at 6 months without income, the only way I may be able to stay alive is to liquidate my collection. If not, well, I can always start over when the docs are done and the bills are paid! I'll know more after the 16th when I see a neurosurgeon and he has a chance to see me and my MRIs. Remember when one of the team from Sigfreid and Roy got chewed up? Same guy that fixed him is who I'm seeing. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Is that a good thing? confused-smiley-013.gif

Thanks for all your input! Much appreciated!

Bummer, Dave! Sorry to hear of the news. Yep, for the cost of an MRI, one could get an awesome 19th century cameo proof!

David, here's hoping you get most you can for your sets and that the sales will be more than enough to pay your bills and make ends meet.

My prayers go out to you.

Best wishes,

-mark

Hi David,

Sorry to hear about your health, illness sucks large, and the cost of treatment….

You seem to have the right attitude going into this ordeal and keeping thing mind set is probably the best medicine you can have to get through this. I wish you a full and speedy recovery.

Thanks go out to one and all for the best wishes!!!!! Too bad we don't have a group hug emoticon to use...very appropriate!

Hayden, don't be buying nothin just cuz of the way things are!!! Only if you truly want an item!! (I know that's what you'd do anyway!). I just hope there is something(s) you want! 893applaud-thumb.gif

David,

I really like your signature. Could you tell me what kind of camera and lens you are using for the images in your auction?

I'd really like to have as nice of photos as you do.

Jonathan, I use a Canon G2 digital with a 58mm close-up lens. And if you're referring to my auctions, you have no idea how many hours I spent trying to get the right colors/tints, the in-hand look for the auctions. Still wasn't satisfied with most of them, but at some point, you gotta let what you've got go for you. I think most of the problem comes from transferring them to eBay. I firmly believe the pics lose lots in cyber-space.

Taking good pictures is a combination of lighting, practice, patience and a decent camera/lens and in this order. Practice/patience are interchangeable here.

Lots of people like the OTT light, others natural, and still others have their own setup. I use a folding Tensor lamp. I've got the OTT and not happy with it. If you do a search of the forums for "photgraphy", "lighting", "camera", etc., I'm sure you'll come up with more then you ever wanted to know.

Thanks for the compliment! cloud9.gif Means a lot! thumbsup2.gif

Hey,Sorry to here about your illness, hoe it all works out for you.

With your background, you should be able to

pick up some cash playing poker on line, while you are not working. If you have not tried this yet,the fishng is fine. While its doubtful you'd earn enough to make a living,it can provide some pocket money and give you a way to kill a few hours daily.

Speaking of such:

I went shopping a couple of weeks ago here in Tonopah and played a $5 bill in KENO on the way out. Ends up I hit 7 out of 7 numbers in a bonus triple play and won $7500 in cash! Cool, eh? I figured the odds at about 50 million to one.
