Sometimes you get the Bear, and sometimes the Bear gets you...

In light of my recent post on the Tangents forum where the Bear got me I thought I would show results from another auction for a half dime I won yesterday. In this case, the Bear is Heritage and I'm not yet certain if I got the Bear or it got me yet. Here is the auction in question.

1861 Half Dime, ANACS MS60, Breen 3102

Now Breen 3102 is the so-called "1861/0" variety, but ANACS doesn't list that on the label, just the Breen number. Heritage also didn't mention the "overdate" in their title, but they did mention the Breen number. Searching their archives I see that this coin normally goes much higher than this. In fact, I won the coin a good bit below my maximum, and I thought I was bidding low.

Am I missing something here or did everyone else miss something since the "1861/0" didn't appear in the title? I'm looking forward to seeing this one. The images didn't look half bad for an MS60 that typically is considered an ugly grade. Of course it may be hairlined to death. 893whatthe.gif

Do you think the slab is hiding some rim damage? devil.gif

Most specialists of the Seated series feel that Breen was wrong in calling it an overdate. Most now think it is a simple 61/1 RPD, is very common, and deserves no premium.

Sorry, I didn't realize Heritage would require a login to view one closed auction. But the registration is free and it's a great resource for looking up old auction sales prices. Their price guide is decent too. Not perfect, but it's better than the one on CU.

Notice I did call it the "so-called 1861/0" variety. I don't know if it deserves a premium or not, but it gets one. Some people pay good money for coins struck from over polished dies. Go figure.

And exactly what does this have to do with Laura? Please refrain from knee jerk criticism with no basis in fact.

Tha auction itself isn't linkable as its in the archives and must be a member to view and won't transfer with members signin.

Thanks for the picture and the comments. I thought it looked pretty decent for an MS60 (though I can't say I actually own any other MS60). I'm sure it has some issues but they keep it in my budget. I also hear that ANACS has been pretty tight lately and this is a new holder. I could get lucky and cross it at MS61! 27_laughing.gif

No, it's not a net grade. I'll have to wait until I get it to figure out what brought the grade down. It looks pretty dull, but then most of Heritage's pictures (scans) look dull.

Here's the reverse.

Yo - Laura has nothing to do with Heritage. Why are you claiming you can't log into Laura's site when it's Heritage you're trying to log into? What does one have to do with the other?

I'm her watchdog from clueless insufficiently_thoughtful_persons with an axe to grind. Like how you commented that she was probably nice to Frattlaw because he was gonna put huge $$$ into her pocket - on a $750 coin purchase. Stupid.

You've never dealt with Laura. You've never spoken with Laura. You don't even know that Laura owns Legend - not Heritage. In short, you have no clue yet you pile on every chance you get.

If you want to go around making silly little comments because she uses the term 'wannabe', then so be it. And I will follow you around and use the term 'clueless' because it's just as appropriate.
