1863 Indian Head Question

14 posts in this topic

New poster here....

I have a couple of worn 1863 pennies that don't look like the normal pattern. Instead of "United States of America" around the indian head, there are 13 stars, and it doesn't appear there is "LIBERTY" on the head dress. Both are a little different, one has the stars raised.

One of the coins has a faint "not" above the "one cent" on the reverse side.

I can't find this in the regular coin books and have tried internet searches but can't find these.

Since these coins are from the Civil War period, not sure if they are counterfeit, confederate knock-offs or something else.

Any ideas?

They are worn, but it is clear that in the place of "liberty" there are round circles adorning the head dress along the entire band. So it is discernable that no "liberty" was on the coin.

I will try to get some pictures up, but have never taken pictures of coins before. Any suggestions?

Thx

I don't think I've seen a civil war token with "not one cent" on it, just the hard times tokens from a couple three decades before. But there again, I don't have a lot of experience with either. Showing pictures would be your best shot at getting them figured out.

Sounds like Civil war tokens to me and not Indian Head cents. The date is right as most of these are dated 1863-1865 and Indian Heads appeared on numerous examples. If they are well worn then my guess is that they would only be worth a few dollars each.

Go on Ebay and look in the coin section for Civil war tokens and I am sure you will find some examples that are similar thumbsup2.gif

Sure. It's pretty easy. A couple of things I'd need to know before offering suggestions, though.

Do you have a digital camera or a scanner? Do you have software to resize the picture?

The scanner would probably be best for a quick picture to just i.d. the tokens. Scan, crop, resize until you have a picture around 300x300 pixels then in the screen where you preview your post, there's a box where you can attach pictures from your computer.

http://www.civilwartokens.com/ has a listing of all the types of patriotic tokens by Fuld number, but no pictures. There are some links at the bottom of that page that may have more info.

Those should do. thumbsup2.gif

Somebody will probably wander by that can i.d. them by Fuld number, if that's what you're looking for.
