GRADE REVEALED! 1926-S Buffalo nickel

16 posts in this topic

The best they should have given it was F15, although the services are notorious for ignoring the horn on this one and giving it a VF20 for wear. The problem with that is that it puts it into a much higher price range because collectors want a full horn if they're paying VF money. The gray banding at the horn and tail looks bizarre, but maybe it looks better in hand.

I would say EF35 but the coin has damage and I wouldn't think it would slab unless it was a ANACS "net" grade.

The more I look at this coin, the more I think I owned it a few years back. Old PCI middle-VF grade slab. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Maybe I owned it's twin.

This is a scarce date and the TPGs tend to ignore things like "full horns" and minor damage (sometimes major damage) for scarce dates. I'll guess that it's net graded by PCGS as VF30, but I wouldn't buy it as such.

There were some outstanding guesses and some very sharp eyes on this one!

The ANACS grade is: VF DETAILS, NET F 12 (DAMAGED).

The damage is visible as old counting-wheel damage on the reverse which, unfortunately, affected what was undoubtedly a full horn.

I bought this coin for $100, and it now resides in my Whitman album.

On a side note, I was recently offered a 100% twin to this coin (not certified), only it did not have the counting wheel damage. It had a really strong, full-horn reverse, one of the nicest 1926-S Buffaloes I've ever seen, and a true by-the-book VF-20 ..... but he wanted $700!

THANKS for the guesses and insightful comments.

James
