You can imagine my surprise that my design for the Oklahoma state quarter was on a website. That is cool!

I just read a comment the following comment: "I pray that Oklahoma changes it's design. As a native Oklahoman, I hope that we are known by far more than just Indians. Anything would be better than what is pictured here."

I, too, am a native Oklahoman and am proud of Oklahoma's past and of its heritage. James Earl Frazer's sculpture sums up Oklahoma's history more than any other image, in my opinion. And, the word "Oklahoma" means "land of the red people". The US gov't promised the Oklahoma territory to the five civilized tribes for as long as the grass grows, the water flows and the sun shines. As a result, many tribes and nations were forcibly marched for hundreds of miles along what is known as the Trail of Tears.

Representing this on a coin is not degrading to the American Indian nor is it a memorial to the bullying ways of our past but it represents the true and accurate history of my native state as taught to me in the Tulsa Public School system.

The design itself is esthetic and appealling to a wide range of collectors from numismatics to americana. Additionally, the central device is large and simple enough to facilitate easy striking during the manufacturing process and is large enough to the naked eye to be enjoyed for the great piece of work called "The End of the Trail" housed in the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, OK. So, as evidenced, this design is steeped in Oklahoma history!

Sincerely,

Victor D. Easley

Way to go making your daughter proud, Victor! thumbsup2.gif

I think your concept is far better than many that are already in circulation and the history is important. Good luck. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

Thanks for all of the complements, boardsters. Actually, my daughter is a straight A student but don't you know that is the way teenagers e-mail? smile.gif And, she is not the typical bratty teenager. She is cool and we have a great relationship. Gracias a Dios!

What are some opinions and attitudes about depicting an American Indian on the design? Especially considering Oklahoma's history?

I think that the Oklahoma quarter is a fitting place to portray the American Indian. Firstly, because of the state's original tribal heritage of the Five Nations and secondly, because of it's relatively large remaining native population.

I am part Cherokee as well. From the earlier North Carolina lineage. They went to Pennsylvania and my Great Grandfather went on to Massachusetts instead of Oklahoma.

What are some opinions and attitudes.........?

Victor, I love the idea. I will send you a PM.

Did you know that the legal battle to gain approval for tribal casinos was first undertaken by the "Florida" Seminoles while under the leadership of James Billie? He spearheaded this movement back in the late 70's. Billie was eventually ousted by the tribal council, but were it not for his efforts and success in that legal battle at the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court, tribal casinos may not exist today. As a result of Billie's audacity and foresight, to this day the IRS continues looking for ways to punish him. It is also interesting to note that the Seminoles are the only tribe that has never signed a peace treaty with the United States.

BCS?

Thanks for the complement to my daughter, Hayden, but don't let me catch ya on the bourse floor after slammin' me! crazy.gif893whatthe.gifgrin.gif

I actually cleaned the design up last August and made the letters sharper with stars separating the names of the five civilized tribes. I just don't have it digitized.

Chris had a good idea in a PM: he suggested that I separate the names with mini-arrowheads pointing away from the central device. I thank that it is a good idea but would have to see the design with this incorporated into it in order to decide for sure. Stars are more simplistic and classic, IMO.

Well, thanks for sharing my excitement and all. You're all a bunch of swell fellers and, Mel, you're pretty cool yourself!

P.S. The near full circle encircling the "End of the Trail" device kind of represents the moon and also provides an arc to circumscribe the names the five tribes.

Do you think that it might look better if the moon was actually incorporated into the design with the central device superimposed upon the moon? The moon would look similar to the 1976 Ike dollar.

P.P.S. Regardless if my design is selected or not, I will get high relief dies made of this design in 2007. The opposite side will have a representation of the Oklahoma state flag (a shield crossed by a peace pipe and an olive leaf). I will also have the word Oklahoma circumscribed on the top of the obverse (the flag side) and the word centennial circumscribed on the bottom. My plan is to have 100 one ounze silver medals struck and one gold. I will strive for quality. Then, I will donate one to the ANA, one to the Cowboy Hall of Fame in OKC,OK and will give one to my good friend, michael. The gold is for me though, baby! I will offer the rest in CoinWorld & Numismatic News at cost.

My motive is not pride nor vanity but a conviction of a cool design based upon the work of a great artist and to preserve the historicity of the centennial of the great state of Oklahoma!

The idea of the moon forming the backdrop of the central device is great! You wouldn't need to underscore the tribal names becuase the high relief would serve that purpose. Then it would look like the moon rising on the horizon (or setting if he were traveling north). Victor , could I prevail upon you to reserve one for me? I would like to have it graded and ecapsulated with your signature on the insert. It would always remain one of my prized possessions.

Cool, Chris. Thanks for the complement. I was just talking with a good friend yesterday and were discussing perhaps having ICG encapsulating and numbering them. I don't know if I would feel too comfortable signing the inserts, however. Kind of seems vain to me. But of course, I'll reserve one for you: number 101 out of 100. tongue.gif

How's this idea?

Have the moon and incuse the names of the tribes along the inside border of the moon??? It will be proof cameo so the lettering will be highly reflective.

And...

Just have the moon cameo but the horse/Indian device polished to be reflective?

"Your so vain

I know you think this song is about you

Don't you! Don't you!"

I think it would be an honor and a privilege to have your signature encased with it. Authors do it all the time!

I'll reserve one for you......"

That does it! I'm not calling you EZ any more!

"....incuse the names of the tribes along the inside border......"

Even on a 1oz silver, don't you think the lettering would have to be very small, yet still be cramped? If you think about it, wouldn't it be symbolic of the tribes dependence ON THE MOON for their timekeeping? It would also allow you to place craters on the surface that would make it more recognizable as the moon.

If you don't mind, I would prefer #21 (my Mom's birthyear) and #47 (my birthyear). Did I ask you to reserve just "1"?

(It's bacon!) Oh please, please, please, please, please!
