Best $1k coin for Value/Pride

17 posts in this topic

Hello - I have been into coins for a few months now and am ready to make a plunge to get a coin I can take pride in, and know that it's a good value/investment. I am comfortable at the $1k price point. For me, at this time, it will be the centerpiece of my collection.

What should I get for $1k? If I stretched and spent a bit more, is there a sleeper that stands out?

Many thanks for your help. As a newbie, I very much value your opinions.

PS - My interests are in gold, and maybe early copper. Not really into modern at this price point.

Paul

I have some suggestions:

#1 An 1818 or 1820 Randall hoard large-cent grading around MS-64 RB. There's something special about a 200 year-old coin with a ton of original surface remaining.

#2 Any business-strike quarter or half dated 1879 - 1890 (P mint), cameo proof-like and grading in the MS-63 range. These are always gorgeous coins, with the allure of very low mintages (though they are not rare).

#3 A Virginia half-penny in MS-63 RB or so - always available, and again, a coin well over 200 years old with original mint red!

#4 1804 half-cent spiked-chin in AU-55 or better.

#5 Any post-1825 Capped Bust half grading MS-62. History in your hands, UNCirculated at that!

HAVE FUN!!!!!!

PS: Just for the record, I have none of the above for sale.

James

Good number 1 James. thumbsup2.gif

But put a thousand bucks in my sweaty hand and send me off to the coin show, I would most likely at this time be looking for a proof coin, yeah, yeah, that’s it… A nice original proof coin… minted before 1916… Any denomination from cent to half… I just start to drool thinking about it… but that’s me… insane.gif

Also welcome to the boards Paul! hi.gif

A nice uncirculated "S" mint Indian.....maybe the 08-S through 11-S...I am pretty sure you could pick one of those dates and find a coin in lower MS that could be purchased for $1000

You might consider buying a MS63 Indian Eagle. These sell in the $900/$1000 range for the more common date coins. Many of these coins tend to be scuffy and have poor luster, but if you can find a clean one in this price range, they are nice coins.

I don't post much in the US forum any more - but this time I just couldn't resist devil.gif

LateApex - if it were me making that decision, I go with world coinage. You could even get 2 gold coins in MS condition and still not spend $1000. And you get a whole handful of silver coins for that price wink.gif

I would suggest a nice PROFESSIONALLY GRADED BY NGC or PCGS 1909 S-VDB Lincoln cent in AU grade. My second choice would be a pair of coins.

A nice 1909-S Indian Head Cent in EF grade and a 1914-D Lincoln cent in EF as well. Both should also be certified by NGC or PCGS. All three coins would be sound investments in my opinion. Which is worth about as much as your pocket change plus the lint . Good Luck on whatever choice you make. Hopefully it will be a well informed and wise decision. thumbsup2.gif

thumbsup2.gif A very unloved series that still has a lot of value left in it. I personally prefer business strikes to proofs. With some searching you should be able to get a nice MS66 for around $1K. If you want a proof, a PF66 CAMEO is easily doable for $1K.

Very attractive coins that are in demand right now. However, a nice PF66 will run more than $1K. The last one I sold went for $1300 and was snapped up very quickly by a dealer who flipped it for more even quicker. PF65s are around $800-$950 right now.

Tip for my NGC forum buddies:

Consider looking at 1867 w/o rays if your interested in a Shield proof. It has long been believed that the Mint produced only 25 1867 with rays proofs (the number 25 comes from Mint documents). Recent studies show quite definitively that the 25 proofs to which the records refer are actually proofs struck with reverse IIo (a prototype without rays reverse used to strike J-507). It was recently designated FS-1867-1001, and only one (graded 65) appears in the NGC census. That coin belonged to Sunnywood ex Garrett, was sold to QDB, and now resides in a new ANACS holder graded 66.

I've seen 4 or 5 other 1867 rev. IIo that have not been designated (and probably still haven't been recognized for what they are), although I know where only two of those ended up. This is a great cherrypicking opportunity. The market will eventually realize the rarity of the proof 1867 rev. IIo relative to the proof 1867 with rays. Keep your eyes open!

Paul,

Great question! You have entered the market at a good time for the following type coins which Michael has suggested. Other areas of the coin market has taken off astronomically like matte proof Lincolns, Bust dollars and other early date US coinage. The following coins have probably only appreciated c. 25% in the last 3-5 years or more which equates to relative bargains in today's market. The other mentioned coins have appreciated hundreds of percentage in the same time. In the mid nineties, you could have picked up nice Bust dollars for c. $600. Now, the same coin would cost $3000 plus. So, ask yourself, what coins still are reasonably priced with great potential? The following are such coins:

a really nice eye appealling proof66 cameo shield nickel preferibly 1880 as this date is not available in ms64 or higher unless you want to pay 8k to 100k

1880 PR 66 Cameo Shield Nickel

a nice eye appealling strongly cameoed proof64 seated quarter pre 1880

1885 PR64 Cameo Seated Liberty Quarter

a nicely blue toned proof65 66 bn red brown indian cent this will be way under 1000

1898 PR66 RB IHC

a really nice original not dipped or baking sodaed au50 classic head 5 dollar gold piece that is really a high end really nice xf45 but the holder its in says au50

1836 AU50 Classic Head $5 gold

If your current interests are gold or early copper you may want to look at a truly choice, original colonial piece such as a New Jersey cent in mid-grade. Buy a nearly perfect coin that is not pitch black and you will have a truly fascinating, relatively undervalued coin that is fairly liquid in any market.
