Coin id ?

10 posts in this topic

Hello. I am just learning to post images so please excuse the bad pics. I have just purchased a bunch of world coins. I do have a World coin book on the way but I wanted to post some that I was unsure of. These are just my first world coins so they aren't high end coins but I love them.

I haven't quite mastered the lighting thing on imaging coins and this zinc one was even more difficult. French-German WW occupation?

What denomination is this one? What is the metal content? Is there any good online world coin sites? Thanks for any info. I promise the book is on the way. Oh and Hoot thanks for the Half.com tip. I purchased 5 used coin books. I am so happy. grin.gif

The first one is probably some type of French vending machine or gaming token. Appareils Automatiques = automatic apparatus.

I'll guess the other is a French 50 centimes KM894.1 dated between 1931 and 1941, since it looks to be aluminum-bronze. What's it say on the other side?

Thanks Spiny for the info on the Zinc token. I am sorry for asking a stupid question on the second one. It says 2 Francs 1936. I meant what is the conversion like to US coins. Penny, Dime etc. I have pages of lower grade darkside coins that I am having a blast learning about. Who is the guy on the obverse of the 2 Francs? He reminds me of an early Caesar. cloud9.giflol. insane.gif Ok you can laugh at me now but when I get my books I will study very hard to not look like a fool on this forum. grin.gif

I'm not sure what the purchasing power was of 2 Francs at the time, but I doubt it was much. The 20 Francs was the only denomination with silver at the time and it only had a little more silver in it than our 50 cent pieces.

Marianne is the person on the coin. She's the symbol of liberty for France and has been on many of their coins in one form or another. That one happens to be a rather... uhm... handsome portrait of her. Kinda like our Barber coins.
