Is it really worth this much?????????????

This eBay auction by a well-known dealer has me wondering about the value of it because I have one in to NGC for grading right now. I submitted it as just a RPM as the mint mark is doubled but NGC "adjusted" the variety to the D/D/D FS30.5 with no help from me! And as far as I know, it isn't doubled like a 39 Jeff is (the MONTICELLO and FIVE CENTS) unless I just didn't look close enough! blush.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif

It's a bit of a tough variety to detect, but is noticeable with a loupe, especially in the last O of MONTICELLO and the TS of CENTS. It's likely pretty rare in 66, but may also be oft-overlooked. I'd say that Mr. Herndon is dreaming to get well over 2 grand for it, but what the hell do I know? confused-smiley-013.gif

Wayne is a regular poster over at PCGS so you may want to shoot him a message. My own take on this, and this is just my opinion, is that this variety isn't worth all that much. However, because it is needed for a complete PCGS Jefferson Variety Registry Set that the high end graded coins have become high priced bait for those caught in the belief that if the Registry says it's so, then it's so. In other words, he's fishing.

I am surprised that he hasn't had a bid! People are paying silly money for PCGS nickels in higher grades! Buffalo also.

This is a coin I had on consignment for awhile. It is the finest known for the variety.

After discussions with the consignor about price we agreed to price it at $2400. I ran it several times on ebay, took it to small and large shows, had it on the website, and listed it in several full page CW and NN ads. It always generated a lot of activity (callers, watchers on ebay, questions emailed, etc.) but never could close a deal for my consignor. At a one point I felt bad I hadn't been able to sell it and offered to return it. The consignor said to hang on to it and keep trying. I was recently sending some coins to Teletrade and decided to include this one. I reserved it at the same $2400 and it sold in the first listing for $3200. Needless to say, everyone was happy.

It obviously was to the purchaser. There's probably several hundred more esoteric varieties out there that have been missed because the variety collectors aren't using high enough power loupes - If they get a place on the registry set list, that "pimple on the ..." variety may be worth millions! wink.gif

All kidding aside, finest known varieties clearly have "increased" value - but one must be careful not to over-pay for something that is only discernable by using a 10x (or higher) loupe.

People pay silly money for any pure [embarrasing lack of self control] grading service holder. NGC far and away ranks #1 as far as accuracy and customer service IM(NS)HO.

It's not worth $2399 but it is worth $3200? Sounds like I need to sell coins on Teletrade! Let's see, what can I sell? wink.gif

TeleTrade: Junk coins, no descriptions, poor prices. Avoid.
