Should there be a giveaway contest for new board members?

9 posts in this topic

I didn't know which category to pose this question in....

It seems like there have been several new members posting recently, or maybe lurkers who finally decided to make a post here and there. Are there many other collectors who visit the boards but never post? I was wondering what everyone would think of a giveaway to encourage new members to sign up and/or post. Opinions?

Maybe a giveaway to people who reach 100 posts within a given time period? That would insure they're not lurking just to get entered into the contest...they'll stick around a little while.

Of course, that could also just induce post whoring.

I'm glad I never did that on the PCGS boards before my expulsion. angel.gif

Thanks Chris! But the May issue is already out and damnit if I didn't mention you! 893whatthe.gifwink.gif. (Can't figure out how to mention pool in a coin magazine... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif)

As for the question about the give away, I think that NGC should send out sample slabs to each person who makes 1000 legitimate posts. Has anyone achieved that yet? 27_laughing.gif

Hoot, I've played pool in 43 states, in all kinds of poolrooms, bars and taverns. There are so many stories that I've forgotten, but it's wierd how one word or phrase can ignite your memory. It seemed strange to me that I could remember the very first time I went into a poolroom nearly 49 years ago and still recall every vivid detail of that experience, today. But, for some reason, I could never recall how it was that I actually became interested in coin collecting. That is, until you just mentioned it, here. It's as though a light was turned on in my head and I found "it" hiding way back in a deep, dark recess of my brain.

I was getting pretty good at pool, and by the time I was ten years old I was playing in "high stakes" games of 9-Ball..............nickel on the five, dime on the nine at Ray Weddle's Rockville (MD) Poolroom . It was a dingy place with just five tables on a concrete floor in the basement of The Montgomery County Sentinel Building (newspaper) that fronted on the town's main thoroughfare, Montgomery Avenue.

It was the summer of 1958 and I was nearly eleven. I got into a game with a boy named Joe Clement. He was tall, skinny, had red hair and was about six years older than me. He was also a pretty good pool player. In those days, at least in our area, it was uncommon for anyone to get "nitted" (cheated) so we kept the score on the "wire" and each bead was worth a nickel. I was winning which made Joe mad because I was much younger. He "jacked the bet" to ten cents and twenty cents. He finally quit when he was broke. He owed me $6 and all he had was five, one dollar bills and a one dollar coin. It was the first time I had ever seen one, but I took it anyway. Boy, was it pretty! It had a date of 1921.

On the walk home from Ray's, I decided to take a detour and stop by Citizens Bank next to the Milo Theater. It was about 4:00 PM, but in those days the banks stayed open until 5:00 PM. My parents had opened an account, there, for me and I saved the money I earned mowing lawns for $1 per yard.

I went to one of the teller "windows". I showed her the coin and asked if she had any more of these. As I stood tiptoe on the footrail she opened her drawer to show me that she had a lot of them. I asked her if she could pick out five more that were as pretty as mine and I gave her the other $5 that I won playing pool.

Not long after that episode, I went to the library and borrowed a book about coin collecting. It was a "Red Book" and my Morgan Dollars were in it! Throughout that summer, I would take my pool winnings and go straight to the bank. If they didn't have any Morgans, I would take Peace Dollars. Then one day I got into a "ring" game at the poolroom and when I won a game, one of the guys paid me with a Standing Liberty Quarter................

I seem to remember that I was about fourteen or fifteen when I quit mowing lawns altogether. I didn't need to work that hard for the money.

"........sample slabs.......1000 legitimate posts. Has anyone achieved that yet?"

To be completely fair, existing posts should not count. Everyone starts at zero.

I would like to place my "slab" order, now, for a 33 Saint over very easy, please!
