Bitten by the draped bust bug !!!!!!!!

13 posts in this topic

Last week I purchased a draped bust quarter dollar for a friend , During my inspection of the coin . I suddenly felt a strange yet some how familiar sensation.

Yep, I`d been bitten again . But, something was very different this time. This was not a key date coin ! Just a moderately circulated type coin. Why did I find this so appealing ? Was it the long shoulder length flowing hair of Miss Liberty ? Perhaps it was the strong boldness of the heraldic eagle on the reverse, with the stars and clouds arrayed above ? I questioned myself repeatedly.

For as long as I can remember I`ve only had an interest in the key date coins of the various series. The rarity, high values, and popularity of these coins is what had always captivated my interests. So what was so special about this particular type coin ? I honestly do not know ! But peak my interest it did. Even to the point that I offered my friend a 20% profit on his investment if he would allow me to purchase the coin from him. Now understand, this was not a pristine example by any stretch. But it had just enough details to received my official okee dokee !

Even though it runs contrary to everything else in my collection. I`ve decided to run with it and see where it takes me. I did purchase the coin from my friend and have taken my first step toward this new quest. I think I`ll start with a date/type set of all the denominations for this year. So wish me luck gang.

Photos will be attached of the piece that captivated me. A very simple piece which wielded great power persuasion. confused-smiley-013.gif

Very few collectors understand the difficulty of locating nice large-sized bust quarters like yours. They don't realize that the difference between a VG coin and one in Fine is a huge discrepancy in detail, probably the largest of any coin series. Whereas a VG lacks any highpoint detail at all, and can even have faintly merging rims, a coin in Fine tends to look drastically better, and a VF drastically better than a Fine!

Congratulations on delving into a unique and possibly the most connoiseur-oriented series of all US coins!

It's a beautiful coin, and isn't the series absolutely terrific? Good luck in finding problem-free examples with significant meat on them, they are mighty scarce.

Quite right Tom ! This is definitely going to be a tough challenge. But that`s half the fun of numismatics . The seach for the perfect piece to add to ones collection that fits like an old worn pair of jeans.

I've been avidly searching for attractive, mid-grade pieces for about seven years and my entire collection of them encompases two pieces! 893whatthe.gif Here they are-

Outstanding Tom !!!!!

You have some great pieces there. Really wonderful details. You definitely have bragging rights on those two. Also on the 1921-D Walker you posted photos of previously. All are high quality pieces in my book. :applause As to the grades, I would guess that the quarter is VF-35 to EF-45, the dollar (as there isn`t a 1/2 below the ribbon) I would guess to be F-15 to VF-25. Just wondering if my grading skills for these types is up to par.

Thank you for the kind words on the coins! smile.gif

They're actually both quarters that are imaged above. The 1796 quarter now resides in a PCGS F12 holder, though I bought the coin on ebay as a VG!!! 893whatthe.gif The 1805 quarter is in a PCGS VF20 holder, and this one had also been on ebay!!! 893whatthe.gif The 1805 quarter is likely net graded by PCGS because the details are far and away nicer than VF20, they are more like VF30 or better, and the surfaces are completely original. However, there are some light serated marks on Ms Liberty's face that are picked up quite well in the scan. The marks are actually harder to detect with the coin in-hand, I think the fluorescent light of the scanner makes them easier to see. Perhaps I should have it regraded at some point since it stands a good shot at an upgrade.
