newbie question

Hi there. I have some old wheat pennies, and I was wondering if they are worth grading...if they were comics, I would say they were good to fine range. should I clean them with anything before sending them in? I know nothing about coins so speak simply and slowly.....

You should probably take them to your local coin shop, or ask someone knowledgeable to look at them. Unless any of them are one of the three most sought after (not including erros), the 1909 S VDB, 1914 D, or 1922 "no D", you would probably not want to spend the money to send them in for professional grading. Still - wheats are a wonderful place to get acquainted with coins. They're inexpensive, abundant, and the varieties are in the 1000's. Pick yourself up a "Blue Book", and the Official ANA Grading Standards book, and/or any of hundreds of pennies related books. Good luck to you!

I would not recommend doing any cleaning of your coins yourself unless you want a quick way to reduce any value you may have and copper if very unforgiving. Too often we see the unfortunate results of amateur conservation efforts. Taking your coins to a knowledgeable third person is a great next step.
