1808/7 Capped Bust Half

9 posts in this topic

Hi folks, I haven't posted over here in quite some time. So since I posted this

over yonder 893whatthe.gif I thought I'd post it here as well.

First over-date for the Capped Bust half series. This is my favorite over-date (so far) as the seven

shows clearly on top and through the second eight. With very prominent die-cracks going all up

the left and right side of the obverse. These are known to be weakly struck as is common for

this first design for the series that started in 1807. In 1809 the design changed a bit with a shorter

face, more detail in Liberty's cap and a few other things as well.

This piece that I'm posting (my scan) while it doesn't show the iridescence of the colors, and the satiny luster

that goes through the fields is a good representation of the coin. Also, due to many of these with soft strikes,

and/or weak detail, just a little bit of wear can make them appear to have circulated much more than they did.

While I feel this coin has nice original color and surfaces, along with good detail.........

it still is "Crusty" in my eyes.;) Also it doesn't have the usual

hairlines often seen in this series, from a light wipe or the other problems associated with these coins.

Howdy stman! smile.gif I saw your thread across the street and your coin was so nice that I simply had to post there. Your coin is gorgeous! There was one person who seemed to not appreciate the look of it in the other thread, but I think it's terrific. thumbsup2.gif

Don't be such a stranger, eh! 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Very nice. This is a tough marriage to find in such a good state of preservation. I think the 1807 and 1808 hub designs are the neatest in the Bust Half series.

Superb piece - looks like a vastly better struck piece than most 8/7 havles. And what a GREAT original look to that coin! cloud9.gif This coin beats the daylights out of most of these that appear like they've been through heck and gone. Truly a special and rare piece, even though the variety is rated R1. Excellent! thumbsup2.gifyay.gif893applaud-thumb.gif

Thanks for the good words guys!!!!

There was one person who seemed to not appreciate the look of it in the other thread,

Hi Tom, yes I seen that and it didn't effect me at all. Not everybody can appreciate such a coin. Also, with all the high tech photography going on... some folks just can't read a scan like us "Dinosaurs." makepoint.gif I've spent enough time learning to post images these days, and to get a decent scan. I use a better scanner now but it takes me a lot of time and effort to get what I feel is a good representation of a coin.

Most times I can nail the over-all "Look" of the coin. But of course cannot get the full essence of the piece. I'd sure hate to get into a camera, lighting and the learning curve involved. Although it would be nice to be able to show the luster and such. Folks that have been around long enough and have used scanners can read a scan and know just about what the coin would look like in person.

Thanks for your comments.

Nice original coin stman. I haven't seen nor heard much from you since our get-together at Microsoft last year.

Thanks but perhaps you have me mistaken for someone else?

I did live in the Washington State area for several years, but have never been to Microsoft. No problem though, it's all good.

Maybe I am mistaken (not unusual because real names don't match handles). However, I thought that you came (with some Bust Halves) to a Saturday get together with Victor, Jeff Tryka and others that was held in Edmonds in one of the Microsoft office buildings last year.

Stman, a beautiful coin. In fact, it is an unusually nicely-struck bust half of the 1807-1808 type Capped bust. Of particular note is the area from the bottom of the chin down through the top of the bust. Your coin shows only three spots of wear, whereas typically, this area is one large blow of wear due to a weaker strike, and therefore a flatter area of detail. Very impressive!
